Neither, The original internal 1 TB HDD was a 3.5" SATA drive.

Just about any external enclosure (with power supply) for a 3.5 " drive should work. Have you decided how you want to connect the external to your computer? The fastest available connection for a 2009 27" iMac is the Firewire 800. If you want to use the firewire then you will need an enclosure that supports it.

Thank you Coastal, that is just the info I needed.

09 is DOA at Mac shop, they are calling possible HD fail. Either way cost to dig in exceeds value, so home it goes.

I was thinking if they were wrong, I would dig in and pull the HD and use it as back up. But, I have since gone all to Minis, so now I won't even start into it. Thanks again. a2

Flynnstone. Although Einstein was right, drive was (recall) replaced by Apple about 3 years ago. It is Barracuda 7200-12, old design, but very low time. It should work till I upgrade all my old stuff. Newest here now is still 2012.

I tore down the machine for the learning experience, as it was a probable CPU/GPU fail. (The shop call was HD... Wrong. LOL) A2
