Is it normal for my MBP to use this much RAM when I don't have anything running/open?

    Free: 5.27 GB
    Used: 2.72 GB

No programs running. Activity monitor and screencapture the only things using the CPU.

restart your computer and check memory usage again, should be much lower.

Used doesn't really tell you what the OS is using. Used includes inactive buffers and stuff like that. Instead, what really matters, is Wired and Active. I'd bet that those numbers are much lower.
