I'm flying to Tokyo on Tuesday, where I'll be picking up a "Pocket Wifi" hotspot to use for the week that I'm there. It's not unlimited data, and I'm worried that my iPhone will go, "Oh hey, wifi!" and proceed to download some gigs worth of iOS 11 on both mine and my husband's iPhones.

I'm planning to upgrade to iOS 11, but not in the middle of an overseas trip where my phone is my lifeline for maps, etc.

Does anyone know of a way to shut off background downloading of iOS 11 when it's on a wifi connection?

Find online the Tv os beta profile and install it. You will not get updates.

Hmmm. Not that I know of. But, it won’t download unless you’re on WiFi and plugged in.

This is kind of a janky way to do it, but you could enroll in the public beta program, download the current beta (gold master) and let it sit there until you get back.

Thanks for the tips! So on wifi *and* plugged in? Maybe that's a good thing. I think the AirBnb has regular wifi in the apartment, so maybe it'll download when I'm charging overnight.

Otherwise I may look into the public beta - as long as I can get subsequent dot releases as not beta though.

This is a much better way than maxing out the storage to prevent the 2.5 GB download. In the old days, I was sick of having the red notification on the settings icon and the download retaining that amount of storage.
