is it possible to silence video audio in iMovie 09?

I am trying to put together a project where I would like to at a certain section of the video silence the video audio play some music then re intreduce video audio.

Is it possible to do this and if so how do I do it?

There sure is. Select the clip you want to edit, and at the front of the clip on the bottom there's a symbol, click that and then click audio adjustments, and drag the audio down to 0%.
If you only want to silence part of a clip, split the clip so the part you want silenced is it's own clip, and silence just that part. If it's too "choppy" you can manually adjust how the clip before it fades out.
