That same $$$ will buy you the 2014 "high end" Mini (from the right source), with 8gb RAM standard, IRIS graphics (much better than HD4000), and a 1tb fusion drive (120gb SSD + 1tb HDD).

I have a 2012 i7 Mini right here, typing on it now.

But if I had to spend that amount of $$ on a "new" Mini, I'd get the 2014.
It's a much better buy.

Depends on what kind of software OP uses.

If the software mainly uses GPU then 2014 model is faster.
If software is uses mainly CPU 2012 model is much faster.

Keep in mind that 2014 is much harder to upgrade, RAM cannot be upgraded in any reasonable means and installing SSD is much harder compared to 2012 model.

Personally I think 2012 and 2014 models have inflated prices and I wouldn't purchase neither one for that price. On the other hand Mini isn't suitable for my purposes (I'm writing this on a Mac Pro 2009, I recently sold my 2014 Mini after I got fed up with its limitations)...
