With 12.2 final candidate being released is Monterrey ready for prime time and recommended to update?
I am running M1 2020 Powerbook which is running fantastic on Big Sur.

What is the consensus, do you recommend taking the jump or wait for 12.3?

I diffidently like Monterey 12.2 RC as it current runs over any recent Big Sur releases. I am using both a M1 iMac and a M1 Max MBP. I don't use external hubs or displays at this time. Safari 15.3 on rare occasions just quits. But I can been using with multiple tabs for hours. Is it stable, very.

choose big sur
and wait for final version of Monterey which will be released one year later.

I'm probably going to end up breaking my own rules when I buy my next mac because it will come preloaded with Monterey, but until my tech became obsolete I always found it wise to stay one release behind. Unless it contains some feature you cannot manage without, I don't see the point. The best version of an OS is always the last dot release before the new OS (bar any security updates afterwards of course). So likely the best Monterey version will be 12.3 or maybe even 12.4 which will come out before MacOS 13 in October. That's the one I'd download.

Looking at all the problems with MacOS 12 and iOS 15 that users are reporting on just this website alone, it seems to me Apple should put a brake on their needless annual rollout of new OS's, and instead concentrate on getting their current OS's working reliably. But what do I know, I'm only a customer.

I had no intention to upgrade my 2017 iMac from Mojave as it was working well and I saw no advantage for my workflows in doing so. Well that changed. Current products I like no longer supported Mojave and I was forced to either use cloud versions or upgrade to at least Catalina…I chose the upgrade but decided to go all the way. I had a surprisingly to me pleasant upgrade experience. After ensuring my Time Machine backups were solid and restoring test things actually worked properly, I used Techtool Pro to create a volume clone on a separate hard drive. I deleted a few apps that I no longer used, cleaned out caches and other obvious debris, emptied the downloads folder, and took out the trash. Then, in flagrant violation of good practices everywhere, I simply let my 2017 Mojave iMac update to Monterey 12.1 WITHOUT a clean install but just by selecting Update in System Preferences.

To my complete amazement after skipping anything related to Catalina and Big Sur, in about 30 minutes I had a fully-functioning Monterey macOS. Files and apps are normal, appearance is new and in some cases better some cases worse than Mojave in my opinion, Time Machine continues to work including test restores of old files, all settings of importance to me were retained…very, very pleased. I know by not doing a clean install there are likely some dust bunnies/tumbleweeds floating around but if so they are not adversely affecting anything I do.

Two issues resulted: iTunes no longer exists of course so I had to find and get used to its new components. But all my home videos and music libraries were correctly placed in the new counterparts so just a slight learning curve for me. Also, I had to learn the new steps to back up my iPhones and iPads as I prefer to backup to the iMac rather than iCloud. The one loss I had was iPhotos. I had some (a lot actually) of photos in iPhoto that for whatever reason would not convert to Photos so while backed up I might not be able to retrieve them. Will work on this as time permits.

After two weeks, Monterey 12.1 is working very, very well for me. Of course, YMMV.

these threads are so ridiculous. every OS has issues, bugs. and you have people here who've been running monterey since the first beta, and getting their work done.

someone installs a new OS and has a good experience, they'll' post that "the new OS is great, go for it"; another person installs the same OS and things get messy... they'll post on the forum "stay away from this OS, it's a mess".

there's no one answer. we don't all have the same setups, hardware...

most people(who don't live on this forum) upgrade to a new OS, sort out issues if any, and get on with their day. something to consider...

why? works here without issue (on both of my macs)....
This is all the bugs I have experienced (and are filed to Apple):

* All tabs are not accessible in compact mode (have to use Show next/previous tab in Windows menu)
* Not reloading pages correctly
* Browsing in history menu is painfully slow with spinning beach ball occurring (since Big Sur, Catalina works fine)
* Holding back button in address bar sometimes not showing list of previous pages
* Skips tabs in compact mode
* Goes to the previous page by itself
* Jumps to another tab by itself

So no, it's not OK. None of this is happening in Firefox.

In my experience it runs just as good as Big Sur, which is fine. The one caveat being that I only have Intel-based Macs.

None of this happens on any of my Macs running Monterey and I use Safari extensively.

From Feedback Assistant:

Safari not reloading pages correctly
Recent similar reports: more than 10

Safari jumps to another tab by itself
Recent similar reports: less than 10

So I'm obviously not alone.

not alone, and not definitive. so, it's an issue for some, and not a bug (ie something everyone experiences)...

Well maybe it's even a feature? Call it whatever you want.

Maybe it's you who haven't used/tested the software enough.

defensive much? anyway, not sure what your point is, but 'over 10 people ' and 'under 10 people' does not suggest a bug, but an issue for some... and hopefully apple will sort it out.

My iCloud tabs still do not work as intended -- which has been an issue since forever. That being said, the interface in Safari for using iCloud tabs is hot garbage so I've basically stopped using iCloud tabs altogether.

Back to the subject at hand . . . Two apps holding up transition from Big Sur to Prime Time Monterey . . . Quickbooks 2021 desktop version 20.0.7.908 R8.1 and DropBox. Until if and when Untuit gets their greedy act together and officially acknowledges this version works I gotta stay on BS due to company accounting dependence. Any contact with their staff results in aggressively insane and uncalled for links to their subscription model. As for DropBox they said they're working on a fix . . . can anyone confirm their Dropbox account works OK on Monterey? Any brave souls tried their company desktop Quickbooks account yet?

Dropbox works just fine for me on my 2017 iMac newly upgraded to Monterey. Can’t speak to Quickbooks. Interestingly Intuit was one of my reasons for upgrading from Mojave: TurboTax Desktop was no longer supported on Mojave.

dropbox promises a beta in march for the upcoming 12.3...

monterey beta

Now that’s a blast from the past
Good point. I keep writing powerbook instead of Macbok Pro. But I do have a blast from the past in the form of Pismo, fantastic laptop back in the days!
