I saw the XR in-store today and I felt that although the build and colours are great, the screen felt like a major step backwards because technically speaking it is - if you can’t spot this it’s no doubt because you’re not used to the X. The bezels are clumsy looking too; Apple no doubt used this to further distinguish the XR from the more premium XS under the guise that LCD necessitated it.

I don’t think you can call the XR a cheaper XS Max per se as size has little to do with anything other than preference and the XS and XS Max are only seperated by size. The actual screen real estate is probably closer to the XS given bezel size anyway - anyone have the stats?

Personally, I’d save until I could afford the XS as the XR already feels redundant.
As I've already said in this thread, the XR shows the exact same amount of screen information as the XS Max, and both show 22% more information than the XS.

That’s the thing is it? Funds readily available? According to what data?

I find it rich that XR enthusiasts like you can call those buying XS phones idiots when they bought older tech glossed over by Cook and Co with fancy terms like liquid LCD.

Why not just accept the XR is a different phone for less?

According to my situation, and those of people around me. I know multiple people who have no problem coughing up 1.200 euros - they have the money, no problem - but they don't. Because they believe more than 1k for a phone is ridiculous, and that Apple's gross profit margin of almost 40% and quarterly profit of more than 50 billion $ is starting to look like pure greed.

I admit the same profit margin will apply to the iphone XR, but it's still less money.

I'm not calling anyone an idiot, but paying more than 1k for a phone, only to fill the pockets of apples shareholders some more, feels stupid to me personally.

Anyone free to make his own judgment on this imo.

In India prices are like below:

Note 9 USD 800ish
Note 8 USD 600ish
Galaxy S9 USD 600ish
Galaxy S8 USD 500ish
OnePlus 6 USD 475ish

iPhone XR USD 1050 starting
XS USD 1350 starting
8 USD 800ish

Rock solid argument right there. As if your personal observations are not anecdotal. You extrapolate your personal situation to the world as much as I do.

But hey, if you want to keep on believing that you owning an XS is proof that you are wealthier than people who opt for an XR, keep on telling yourself that.

Show me where I have relied on anecdote please.

It's isn't exactly a "budget option", it is more like less expensive alternative.

Apple just wants to please broader range of customers. The SE was a budget option. The XR cannot be a budget option by any measure. The XR is just XS/XS Max "lite", IMO.

It came across as sarcastic and condescending. I’d much rather hear an explanation rather than falsely complimenting my view when you’ve clarified you didn’t mean that at all.

For one who pats himself on the back for thinking he made a good point, this is a bit OTT.

My point is that this XR debate is now ridiculous. The XR is clearly a nice all round cheaper iPhone but that’s not to say it’s a better phone because of it. What defines ‘better’ is personal preference. So for me, I value vibrant screens, speed, memory (RAM included) compact sizing and great design - so if I couldn’t afford the XS, I’d save until I could to obtain my preferences otherwise the XR would feel like a compromise. I’ve no time for idiots saying the XS is a waste of money etc (not saying you are).

Who is anyone to say differently?
