My friend is thinking about buying an iPhone 5 tommorow and he wants to jailbreak it. Is there a way you can tell by the box (does it have the date of manufacturer on the back) which firmware it's likely on?

If they allow you, you can go to this website (http://www.chipmunk.nl/cgi-fast/applemodel.cgi) on your phone and check the production week/year by entering the serial number from the box. If it is before 6.1.3 came out, you might get lucky.

if your phone as just produced (likely isn't) then it would have 6.1.3
it's not like they can update the phone overseas (or can they???)

    It'll likely be on 6.1 or 6.0.x

I bought my iPhone 5 a few weeks ago and it still had 6.0.2 on it. You may get lucky.

I think I'm going to go to the a Genius Bar tomorrow after work. My phone has trouble charging, tried 3 different lightning cables, all the same thing. I'm just not sure how to go about bringing mine in. I don't want to restore it, then have them not replace it, or replace it with something with 6.1.3. I might just bring it in jailbroken and see what they say.

They will void your warranty, list your serial number as modified, and cancel AppleCare if you bring it in.

I'm not sure, but I didn't think they could do that.

They can void your warranty if the genius attending you is a real douchebag, most will not service the device at all and send you either on your way or if you're in a mall, point you in the direction of one of those repair kiosks. I've seen it happen three times I've been to the Apple Store.

They most certainly can and often, will. Some geniuses will be cool and tell you 'Oh one second, I forgot something in the back, and you did too' while giving you a knowing nod at your phone. But this is not the norm, nor should you expect it to be.

It explicitly states in the warranty that if they see you running unsigned code on your device they reserve the right to void your warranty and AppleCare service for the device.

Thanks for the info. I wonder how I can find out what version the replacement will have on them before going in. I would think they would have an older version, but I'd like o know for sure. Otherwise I'll live with my phone like it is as long as I can. It charges, it just stops sometimes and I wake up with a low battery. Sometimes I have to remove and reinsert the cable a couple of time to get it going, but not a huge deal.

6.1.3 just came out, it's unlikely their replacements will have that version, most likely you'll get a 6.1 or a 6.1.2

They normally update to new firmware within a week or so of it being released.

That's my thought as well, but I don't think it's worth the risk.

How does Apple do them by mail? Do they send you a replacement, then you send yours in? Then I could make sure before I switch to the new one and restore my old one.

So I just got off the phone with Apple and they are very adamant that its a software issue. They will replace it, but the more I think about it, it does seem like it started around the last time I upgraded the software. I was just assuming hardware since it seems like the connection between the phone and the lightning cable. I am not wondering if there is anything I can try without restoring it.

It looks like they got it with 6.1.2 then upgraded to 6.1.3 and then regretted their decision when they decided they wanted to jailbreak. I read that post the same way you did the first time I looked at it.
