I was wondering if there is an App that gives me the ability to access my Mac while I am away/at work (through Wifi) and be able to download files, docs, etc?

I have Goodreader, but it seems to only allow you to do this when you are on the same network or locally... and I know you can use something like Dropbox, but just want to be able to grab stuff off my Mac while on the road.

I VPN into my network (was easy to set up on an old WRT54G with dd-wrt set up) and use something like FileBrowser. (mapping to a PC or Windows server share but I think it can access a Mac as well)

I am still in a situation where I don't have the magic answer to file sharing and access anything at any time. It seems that cloud based storage is the direction but isn't quite there yet. I'm curious how others do this as well.

This solution is great if you have adequate computer knowledge :). You have to flash 3rd party firmware into your router to enable this feature. and I think you also have to set the DDNS to be able to access anytime even though your ip has been changed. This does not include setting VPN service on ur MAC.

The simplest solution that you can do is.
    1. Learn more about How to setup FTP service on your target machine http://labs.hoffmanlabs.com/node/942
    2. Setting port forwarding in ur router.
    3. Setting dynamic DNS account.

After that, you will be able to access into ur files everywhere. ;)
