Ok I am neither democrat nor republican.
On one hand I am an atheist, hate religion, pro-science, pro-stem cell research, pro-evolution, pro-gay marriage, pro-abortion. On the other hand I want a small government, less taxes, strong illegal immigration laws (and want to get rid of all illegal immigrants), against giving poor people money, against affirmative action, against welfare, against social security etc.

In these hard times I can't worry about socio-political issues and only worry about economical issues. But every republican candidate I see is a complete nutjob only worried about religion and blocking gay marriage. It's like half of America is obsessed with voting in the most ignorant person possible (so he can be like them) that will institute a theocracy and outlaw gay marriage and teaching evolution in classrooms.

So is there ANYone out there that has even a remote chance at getting elected that isn't a nutjob?
Though why do I kid myself, I live in California which will vote democrat no matter what.

I think you answered your own question. Republicans that aren't stupid are a silent minority. Unfortunately, the GOP goes hand in hand with social conservatism.

Anyone who throws their fellow man's rights under the bus is not a true American. And OP, if you think any of the current crop of Republicans will do what you want, then you're a fool.

Looking in from the point of view of a Conservative from the UK, they're all completely nuts and the vast majority are totally ignorant to the world outside the US.

This is rather concerning for the other 6.8 billion people on the planet as we still don't understand how the world made it through 8 years of Dubya without a nuclear war.

George W Bush did everything I said he would. The man was an absolute nightmare, worse than Reagan. Reagan started this garbage.

Absolutely. Dubya and his cronies did multitudes more damage than good. I'm just thankful we made it out the other side in more or less one piece.

A visit to Texas for a family friends wedding in 2004 was an enlightening experience. :D

Oh please. Give some examples and proof.

BTW- this country could do with some socialism. The countries that have seem to do very well.

OMG! Socialism! So scary! Run for the hills! Hide your children! ****ing ridiculous.

BTW- it's the "Democratic Party". But hey, you guys have never been known for your attention to grammar.

I am sorry to be blunt, but if you think the US Democrats go hand in hand with Socialism, then you have no idea what Socialism is.

It's amazing how ignorant the people in our country are. Some actually think Obama is a socialist. Obama is to the right of Ronald Reagan. People just believe what Fox News tells them. Fear of a black president is what this is.

It scares me how stupid many people in this country have become.

Having lived in both socialist and communist countries, I know very well how these forms of government work.

If true, then you should know that the policies of the US Democratic party and the current President bears no resemblance to Socialism - apart from its use by the Republicans as a bogeyman to frighten Americans stuck in some Mcarthy era time warp (most of them it would seem).

    Absolutely agree.

If you have, you really shouldn't misrepresent what it is in relation to the US Democratic Party. It doesn't do you any favors.

I learned long ago that the brainwashing done on today's democrats does not let them see that the fiscally conservative, tax cutting party of JFK has long ago been hijacked by the tax and spend, bigger government, we will take care of you, neo-socialist modern day democrats.

    It's quite sad really.

Regan left the party because of the shift. JFK was his idol, and he crafted many of his policies around what he believed JFK would do. Brother Teddy was as from JFK as was politically possible on spending and the size of government.

    Thewitt.

You speak of brainwashing like it's a bad thing!

I mean, look at all those people turning up to Tea Party rallies.

As someone who is fairly financially conservative, and considerably more libertarian on social issues, I can empathize with this thread completely. It does seem to be a republican "figure" now you DO have to take extremes in both financially and social issues - drastic extremes.

It's frustrating for me to know that a vote for republicans - or democrats - does not actually mean fiscally responsible electors.

There is also a difference I think between "being socialist" and "having socialistic tendencies." I'd like to think no one honestly believes Democrats in the US are actually socialist (see my first paragraph unfortunately?) but compared to Republicans, they are more socialistic in their political beliefs. But by no means actually socialist.

Also, if anyone thinks Republicans are fiscally conservative they must be blind, they just spend money differently. Democrats would rather spend money on things to better the country and create jobs, Republicans would rather waste the money on the military. If Republicans were fiscally conservative, we wouldn't be in so much debt right now. Thanks Bush!

The way corporations (esp. the parasitic banks) are bailed out in the U.S. with the tax-payers' money, whilst the people is denied something as basic as free health-care, is even more perverted than any socialist regime ever was. Reminds me more and more of France prior to the revolution.
