NYC and it's population density would not be a good place to look for a iPhone. Best of luck.

Grand Central has 64GB Space Gray, no T-Mobile tho.

Buy device only. It will be unlocked.

My advice is to wait in line at Grand Central tomorrow morning. Get there around 6am or earlier. I got there at 6am and walked out at 10am with my iPhone. If you have to work, you're probably ****ed.

The Verizon or AT&T device only will be unlocked. Both will work with T-Mobile 3G and LTE.

I'd try the Grand Central store. The crowds are usually smaller. Someone posted on another thread that at 7:15am (it opens at 8:00) there were about 50 people in line. 5th Avenue is a zoo even when there's nothing new on sale.

NYC and its population density means Apple ships a higher volume of devices here. I got my phone faster and easier here than I ever did in Dallas.

Luckily I'm off on Tuesday/Wednesday and I can pick later shifts so waiting in line is doable for me. 9to5ers are the ones who get screwed.

This morning, Soho only had 64GB AT&T 5s, mostly gray and some white. I got on line at about 8:10am, there was approx. 20 people ahead of me. Got my gray 64 AT&T ticket about 8:45 left the store about 10:10.

    ...

If nothing new is on sale, 5th Avenue is relatively sane between 6:00 and 8:00 a.m. (ask me how I know...:D), but you're right it is a zoo most normal times and when new products launch.

Anytime I've been in Grand Central (even at 7:15 a.m.) it's been insane, but then it is heavily trafficked by commuters, workers etc.

Grand Central looks insane because you get the noise from the station. However, the actual store is usually pretty organized. For all the tourists that visit the station and take pictures of the ceiling, there aren't as many tourists in the Apple Store as there are in other locations such as 5th Avenue.

actually not when I was there

That might be the case now, but when I was there it was constantly packed and very hard to move around (very early in the a.m.). Not to mention trying to get help from a 'specialist'...

5th Avenue is just as you described during the hours I mentioned. I prefer that layout (except for the clear stairway), doesn't feel as cramped. And the specialists are a good deal nicer (the managers are iffy but that is to be expected.).

While less tourists in GC, more commuters etc. for me = too many people in too small a space.

It's all good. You prefer GC, I prefer 5th :)

    back on topic,

I hope the OP's friend finds an iPhone 5s whenever they hit NYC...

I was able to pick up a 5s at the UWS store yesterday (9/25) in the morning. I arrived around 8:30am and walked out with my 5s in about 20min. That morning there was a fairly short line (maybe around 30-40 people) and the staff had just started handing out cards with available phones when I arrived. When they got to me they only had AT&T 64GB Space Gray models available which fortunately was what I wanted. I don't know if they even had any other configuration for those ahead of me in line or not but it seemed like they only had the one I ended up with. I was able to purchase it as device only and walk out with minimal wait. Good luck, everyone!

So he managed to find 32GB grey in Apple store but they say that it is not unlocked. If he buys it on T-Mobile contract free can I use it in Europe with my SIM card?

It's unlocked at the Apple Store, provided he bought it device-only and didn't give any contact information. The store associates are just told to say it's carrier-specific.

If you buy it from a T-Mobile store you can use a non-US SIM, but you can't get it completely unlocked (for US and non-US SIMs) until it has been on their service for 40 days.

Your best bet is to go to the Apple Store, and buy it device only. Ignore the associates who say it is locked. A Verizon, AT&T, or T-Mobile phone bought "device-only" from the Apple Store will work. Just don't buy a Sprint phone.

That sounds good. Are you sure about that? It would be very bad to burn 820$ (750 + taxes) and to end up with very expensive iPod :)

Yes, I'm sure. I bought an AT&T phone "device-only" last year from the Apple Store and it was unlocked. Also, all Verizon iPhones are unlocked. It's a requirement of their LTE license. I actually bought a Verizon iPhone 5s "device only" since they didn't have an AT&T phone in the capacity I wanted.

The only European LTE band the US iPhones lack is Band 7 (2600MHz). It has every other band supported by the European carriers and then some. By contrast, the European phones lack some of the North American LTE bands.

So when I get the phone, I just insert my SIM card and it will work? No need for activation or anything? I am using T-Mobile Montenegro SIM, BTW...

Yes, it's as simple as that. It will activate the phone with any SIM card.

Unfortunately, it looks like the one LTE band the US iPhones are missing is the one band that T-Mobile and Telenor plan to use in Montenegro (Band 7)
