Is this "new" 3.5G AT&T has for the upcoming iPhone real?

So there are a lot of rumors that the new iPhone will support a "faster" 3G than currently- some are calling it 3.5G I believe.

If AT&T was ready to implement this, wouldn't it have leaked somehow? I mean, all the towers need to have something done to them, no? Wouldn't someone working for at&t leak the fact that they are doing something to the AT&T towers that is going to be ready to go, on June X, 2009 (or whenever the new iPhone is coming out)?

Or is AT&T already using this 3.5G on some hardware? Or is it unlikely to be ready to go in a few weeks?

I can't stand all this 3G/3rd generation/EDGE/3.5G/OS3.0 nomenclature. Just make each iPhone generation a different color.....
