I have a problem with syncing my itouch on my mac, so I was hoping that an upgrade to iTunes 9.2.1 will help me fix it.

Is the iTunes 9.2.1 update safe for me? Will it forcefully upgrade the firmware of my ipod (Will I be able to keep v3.1.3)?
If I have to restore my ipod after the upgrade, will I no longer be able to re-JB using Spirit? Then is there any other way for me to JB my device (better if it's an untethered method)?
I do have my 3.1.2 shsh saved.
