I'm running iTunes 4 on an iBook and I just got a new 10gb iPod. My problem is, when I plug in my iPod, the computer itself recognizes it, but it doesn't show up in the "Source" bar of iTunes, so I can't transfer any music. I've tried restarting, plugging in the iPod then running iTunes, running iTunes then plugging in the iPod, etc etc, but nothing seems to work. It's only worked once, and that was the first time out of the box.

The one time that it did work, I turned off the option to auto-run iTunes when the iPod is plugged in. Is it possible that this has something to do with my problem? If that's the issue, the problem is that I can't change the options unless iTunes recognizes the iPod.

If the iPod mounts on the desktop then it's an iTunes issue--well, maybe "issue" is too strong. It sounds like you did something in the preferences. I do that all the time--change a preference and get confused later. If you have an iPod icon at the bottom of your iTunes window then iTunes knows the iPod is there--click it and change your preferences.

That's the problem -- it's entirely possible that it's something in the iPod preferences that's causing the problem, but the very nature of the problem is that I can't access the iPod preferences.

Does anyone else have any ideas? I was under the impression that this was a fairly common problem, not to mention that I've experienced it with two different computers and two different iPods...

iTunes won't recognize iPod? - solution

I just had this problem, and I was finally able to resolve it by...

    - trashing iTunes and iTunes preferences (I just did a find for "iTunes"), basically everything EXCEPT the iTunes Music Library.

    - download and reinstall iTunes

Right after I did this, my iPod was accessible again in iTunes
