Jane Barbe died July 18 at age 74. We all know her voice. She recorded thousands of voice samples for the Bell phone company and voice mail systems, and time and weather services. She's the voice of "I'm sorry, the number you have dialed is no longer in service" and "At the tone, the time will be..." and many others. In the 1980s, her voice was heard over 40 millions times a day! She was a southerner (lived in Georgia) and had learned to hide her regional accent. According to the obituary I read, Jane said it was "really weird" when, on occasion, she dialed a call and ended up listening to her own voice. One time, she overheard her mother slamming down the receiver and saying "Oh, shut up, Jane!'" after getting a recording. She may be gone, but we'll still be hearing from her!
