I know I probably need to restore but how can I restore back to 4.0?

iTunes is going to upgrade to 4.2 isn't it?

Or is there a way to get it outta the frozen mode?

    Thanks!

Why did you erase all content and data?
That deletes everything and the only way to make it usable again is a restore.
I say for a 3G just download 3.1.3 and restore thru itunes to that. Then JB with redsnow and unlock with ultrasnow.

If you Erased All Content and Settings, it erased all your content, including your OS. iTunes won't try to upgrade you to 4.2 until this fall, but since 4.0.2 is current it may try to upgrade you to that. Since it's a 3G however, you should be able to restore to 4.0.1. Just download from Apple and use Option+Click or Ctrl-Click on the Restore button in iTunes to use the older firmware you downloaded.

    Ok cool.
Yeah, he's on TMobile so I have to be able to still unlock.
    Can I unlock with 4.01?

Itunes is saying "NO" to the downgrade.
    It's phoning home.

Says iPhone could not be restored. Device isn't eliglble for requested build

Nope, not for anything below 4.0
If after its done restoring to 3.1.3 goes into recovery mode use tinyumbrella or recboot and hit "Kick device out of recovery" and you'd be fine.

    Thanks for the help.
It looked like it was gonna work but at the end of the restore it said

"iphone could not be restored an unknown error occured (1015)"

Yes, thats what I was talking about above if you read.
Now you just gotta kick it out of recovery mode and you're done.
    Download tinyumbrella http://thefirmwareumbrella.blogspot.com/

    Got it thanks

We put his Tmobile sim in and now it says sim not usable.

Is there a work around or should I just use mine?

The phone still shows the connect to itunes picture on the splash screen

You need to use an AT&T SIM to activate the unit to get to the home screen. Once activated you can download Ultrasn0w to unlock and use a T-Mobile SIM. Don't forget to turn off 3G though in Settings.

Yes, thats because obviously the phone its still not JB or unlocked.
    Its just on stock 3.1.3
Now you need to follow all these steps below to JB the phone and then install ultrasnow from cydia to unlock it.

Or hactivate it using redsnow or pwnage.
But even if he activates it with an AT&T sim he still needs to JB in order to download ultrasnow from cydia:)
