He claims there is proof, but he didn't show it. I think with a claim like this he probably should show the proof, and if he can't because they are still investigating it he should have waited to make the claim.

Yeah sure, they wanted to use the smoke to get through the border unnoticed.

Aren't you glad this guy isn't the president?

The old war monger will try anything to try and be relevant. We really need to get rid of all those 70 and 80 year old congressman. We keep re-electing the idiots who helped get us into this mess.

Didn't there used to be a time when McCain seemed like a decent, sensible guy? What the hell happened?

Maybe the 5½ years in captivity as a POW in North Vietnam has finally taken it's toll?

    Somewhat belatedly, apparently!

Seriously, I liked him pretty well (for a Republican, at least) until he started campaigning in 2008 ... then I was going, "Wait a minute ... who is THIS John McCain?"

His claim seems plausible. This wouldn't be the first time illegal immigrants put their own needs to enter the country above the safety of legal resident homeowners near the border and without any regard to whether their actions pollute or degrade the environment.

In 2000, he found out he can't win the republican primary by being a sane, sensible republican so he had to move far to the right for 2008.

Not according to the U.S. Forest Services. McCain should listen to the firefighters on the ground.

    Excerpts from ABC News ...

A U.S. Forest Service official said today there is no evidence that illegal immigrants started some of the wildfires in Arizona, as Sen. John McCain had claimed.

Tom Berglund, spokesman for the federal group managing the Wallow fire that McCain toured Saturday, said the cause of the fire has been determined as "human," specifically an "escaped campfire," meaning the campfire sparked beyond the confines of the rocks containing it.

Two "subjects of interest" have been spoken to, but as of now, no suspect has been named, Berglund said. When asked if there is substantial evidence that some fires were caused by illegal immigrants, as McCain said at a news conference Saturday, Berglund said: "Absolutely not, at this level."

"There's no evidence that I'm aware, no evidence that's been public, indicating such a thing," he said.

It's also obvious that you and others are more interested in scapegoats than reality. It's so sad that truth is ignored in favor of hatred.

It's just as plausible that the fire was started by an American with poor backcountry skills, but to make either claim without evidence is fundamentally irresponsible.

McCain and the rest should wait for the fire investigation results before trying to pin it on their political hobbyhorse.

I notice he has little to say about Arizona's $250,000 cut to the fire budget or the inanity of making fireworks legal in the state this Jan. even as fire officials were warning that this summer would have a high fire danger because of winter rains and frost.

It's plausible that someone started a fire to keep warm at night and it got out of control. But to blame it on illegal immigration is a little too extreme unless you have evidence you can present.

I think there are many. They are not all out there spouting this crazy ****. Sadly, they have no spines and have allowed their party to be hijacked by the wing nuts.

The problem is that the sane ones are in local government and have no resources to hit the national spotlight.

The same could be said for local democrats as well. Both sides work together for the community and don't have cameras to pander too. Plus they know that if they screw up they won't be elected in 2 years.

Or they start edging toward the right as they rise to greater and greater prominence. Lots of GOPers have started out more moderate and become more and more right-wing as rose through the ranks.

So he moved further to the right. He's a chameleon, he adapts.

These accusations did not start with McCain. He unfortunately repeated something reported by local News outlets that was never confirmed. The News was simply printing speculation from Residents and Border agents in the area.

Many in S. Arizona fire zone blame border crossers

He still shouldn't have repeated it without evidence to back it up.

Unfortunately given how the tea party has hijacked the republican party to be relevant in the republican party you have to be racist and crazy. Sane republicans don't get elected anymore.
