Ok, I have some South Park episodes in .avi that i'm looking to put onto my iPhone. Obviously, I need them in mp4.

Using Visualhub (my fav Mac app) or Handbrake, I can do this conversion. However, i'm faced with two options:

avi -> mp4
avi -> mp4 (iPhone)

I'd PREFER to do the first option, because I'm deleting the avi's after theyre all in mp4. If I watch them on my computer later on, I don't want them to be in the small iPhone format.

However, i'm wondering if iTunes will compress the video FOR me when it xfers it to my iPhone. If not, then perhaps the 2nd option is better...but then it'll have to keep two versions: the full-size and the small iPhone-size!

Does this make sense? What should I do?

I've done the same thing in the past and found that the MP4's are not compressed any further by iTunes. I just live with the slightly larger files. I don't leave the files on my iPod after I've viewed them and swap them out for other episodes of shows.
