The reason I ask is I do want to make sure I don't have the phone lock down to a carrier. Do I need to call AT&T 1st and have them port my stuff over to the sim card inside the phone?

Or do I plug into iTunes 1st, get my "congrats your iphone is unlocked msg" then call at&t?

Thanks for any help guys. Have a nice day.

Did you already have AT&T service when you bought the device? Did you supply Apple a phone number when you purchased it?

It depends if you bought the iPhone device-only or no-commitment. There appears to be a difference.

take your micro sim, cut it with scissors to the size of the nano sim, insert it into the iPhone 5, turn it on, done.

no need to call anybody.
