This is a first for me, but I had my iPhone 7 sitting on my iPad. I picked up my iPad and off slid my iPhone 7, on to the hardwood floor. And it keept sliding a good 8 feet, on its face across the hardwood floor. I picked it up, relieved the glass wasn't shattered. But then I noticed a good bit of scratches, and an especially long one right down the center of the screen. I've polished it as much as I can, it's permenant. I assume it's the coating on the screen which I've heard can scratch. There must have been some tiny piece of sand on the hardwood floor that got it as it slid across. It looks bad.

I actually just purchased a case today, it'll be here tomorrow! Doh!

Do you think I would have any luck taking it the Apple Store and seeing if they'd be kind enough to swap it out? It's totally my fault, but I've heard around release time they can be extra generous.

What do you guys think?

Also, this is a Jet black and how I scratched the screen before I scratched the back, I don't know.

May as well give it a try... good luck, sorry about your misfortune.

That's unfortunate. And the odds of not scratching the back of the Jet Black is rare versus the screen first. Apple would replace the screen for a fee, but I'm not sure what the cost would be. At least the screen can be replaced versus scratching the casing. That had to be the longest eight feet of sliding ever!

Noticing now the scratch goes right through the clock on the lock screen, and on a white screen it has a rainbow line effect.

Interesting idea about the credit card, I'll check in to that.

Don't feel bad, a couple of months ago i saw a dirty spot beneath my iphone 6s camera, well i took my keys and tried to remove it....i didn't remove it and my phone got a tiny scratch....sigh what a moron :( That was the first recent mistake the second recent is the tempetation i got to install ios 10 the thing just drains my batter and i had to downgrade to ios 9....

Also, what's the policy on AppleCare plus? If I bought that now does it still make it elegible for repair? I guess, how would they know it was scratched before I got apple care? Should I do that before I talk to Apple, or will it matter?

IF you take it to apple store and they notice the scratch, they can refuse to add the AppleCare +. You can always contact AppleCare + and have them run diagnostic test and if every test passes, you certainly can add it that way. I don't think the diagnostic test can detect scratches.

Apple Store managers have made exeptions where they allow customers to purchase AC+ after the fact. You'd have to be upfront with them.

However, you don't necessarily need to buy AC+ if you purchased your iPhone in full using a credit card with accidental damage protection. You can do the screen replacement for $129 and file a claim to get reimbursed the $129.

Hm. I'm on Next so only the tax went on the credit card. Not sure about how that will work.

Unfortunately, Amex won't work with items still under installment billing such as Next. Other CCs like Citi Visa will work with installment plans but they can only reimburse you up to the accumulated amount charged to the card so far. Accidental damage protection is typically 90-120 days from purchase so if you file a claim right before 120 days they'll use the total amount charged to the card over 3 months or so.

Ok here's a photo of the damage. Arrow pointing to the worst in all lighting.

I'd wait a month until the 3rd party guys in your local area start doing screen repairs on the cheap. 6 screen replacement costs around £40 in my area and that includes calling out to your home to do it. 7 should be similar.

But, that will void your 1 year warranty with Apple and possibly effect the waterproofing.

Crazy. My phone slid face side down across the parking lot and had really small minor scratches. Oh well.
Swapping my phone out for a new one via iup. Lol

what is iup?
iPhone upgrade program.
I'll probably pay a monthly until I die, but at least I'll always be able to upgrade every year and I get to write the "monthly" off as a tax deduction since I use it for business

Just accept it. It's only a device.

Happened to me a few months back, couldn't live with the scratches so had the screen replaced at my local Apple Store. Now have a tempered glass protector over the screen.

Apple Store can add Apple care + if you bring them the box so they can scan the serial number. They can also install a Belkin Invisiglass for you too.
