Ended up getting a new 2015 rMBP15 (16GB/256GB SSD) (at 2k USD) at the same time as a new 2018 tbRMP15

I'm fine with the keyboard on the latter. I don't need the dGPU and for me the increase in computer power is not a big difference. Miss the ports, but that's Apple's choice and have to purchase a few adapters to accommodate the new 2018 model in any case. The slightly smaller footprint and weight of the 2018 mean that that's what I plan to keep in any case.

The computers are my life / work systems, so it does everything for me.

Been using a 2013 rMBP13 since list month, but needed more than 8GB of RAM to do work in VMs and wanted a larger screen for my older eyes.

Any point in keeping the 2015 rMBP15 as a "hot" spare in case there are any problems that require a return to base for the 2018 model (e.g. keyboard, graphics card etc) - I could probably go back to my 2013 rMBP13 for most things - one or two programs that would be difficult due to the reduced RAM, but doable for a week or two.

Is the 2015 likely to ever become some kind of modern classic?

As a partial work asset, money is not a big issue.

money is not a big issue.
If money is not an issue, then keep it. I think many of us cannot justify spending $$ on two laptops at the same time for a single need, but hey if you have it, and are not bothered by it, why not ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Well I can definitely do other things with the money (i.e. I'm north of my thirties and I don't own a car - so I could put it towards that), it's just that it's not stopping me from eating avocado on toast if I were so inclined.

I think that I will return it - no point in having more laptops floating around - especially as I currently like the new 2018 laptop and have to accommodate the USB-C adapter mess anyway... And then I can reuse the money for a new soldering station...

If it were me I would return it and sell the old 13" as well. It doesn't sound like you have a need for more than a single laptop, so why not declutter a bit while freeing up some capital for something else?
