Trying to determine what's causing a kernel panic whenever I use sleep mode on my Mac Mini 2011 (Lion). Generally sleep mode either works, or it results in the monitor flickering on and off like it's sending Morse code, or the system reboots as a result of a kernel panic. I'm using a HP w1907 monitor and a Western Digital MyBook USB hard drive still in NTFS partition (hard drive can't properly go to sleep either.)

Here's a typical kernel panic dump. Is there anyway to read it to get an idea of what hardware/driver is at fault?

Trying to determine what's causing a kernel panic whenever I use sleep mode on my Mac Mini 2011 (Lion).
Here's a typical kernel panic dump. Is there anyway to read it to get an idea of what hardware/driver is at fault?

The culprit appears to be com.apple.filesystems.ntfs(3.8). In particular, the instruction located at 0xffffff7f8112857e within that binary attempted to read from a non-present page in memory.

Am I right to assume generally the first few drivers that show in the kernel log usually indicate the source of the panic?

In this regard ntfs might mean issue with the external hard drive. It's not formatted for Apple use so that could be the culprit. Maybe?

I focus on the kernel extensions that are listed in the backtrace. I think the list of loaded kexts below that starts with the extensions loaded most recently and ends with those that were loaded earliest. There is no doubt in your case that the panic was triggered by an instruction in com.apple.filesystems.ntfs

In this regard ntfs might mean issue with the external hard drive. It's not formatted for Apple use so that could be the culprit. Maybe?

Don't know. Perhaps someone who knows more will reply.
