I'm opposed to any government intervention in the health care industry. Why do you think that costs have been rising so much?

Transgender people should definitely get surgeries if they feel the wrong gender, but not like this.

Nope. No elective surgery on the tax payers dime for convicted felons.

Unless it was a medical necessity (ie. You are going to die from it) there should be no taxpayer funded optional surgeries allowed.

If they don't get the surgery, are they going to die, be physically disabled or in extreme pain? If the answer's no, it's elective IMO.
So psychiatric care should no longer be provided in prisons? Because that's what this is.

What about chronic conditions? High blood pressure isn't going to kill a lifer in the short-term...should they be denied blood pressure meds? How about antidepressants?

Nice straw man you're building there. All the post you quoted referenced medically necessary and/or elective procedures. Of course we should provide medical care to prisoners. I supported Medicaid paying for the procedure in an earlier thread. I guess I draw the line at prisoners.

Changing a penis to a vagina surgically does not alter anything hormonally in the body. It's an elective surgery, full stop. If you wanted to administer hormone treatments that might be passable, but only if they weren't in for cold blooded ****ing murdering someone and would continue their life outside of prison following their sentence.

That's not really the same thing...

This seems reasonable enough. We'd pay for a lifer to get a hip replacement.
Sure it's the same thing. It's elective surgery. Cosmetic. Replace a hip so they can walk it totally different then chop my penis off so I can go to a woman's prison. Personally I feel that in 1992 they should have discontinued the hormone treatment also.

While it depends on where you set the line sex change operations aren't cosmetic.

I agree with you.

We've already had discussions about how this is not merely elective surgery.

The inmate is there for life.

So for the rest of their life we need to take care of the conditions with which they are afflicted.

This is one of them.

Are they going to send him to a female prison afterwards?
This would IMO be the appropriate thing to do.

Are you saying that believing you're a woman when you're really a man is a mental illness?
Poor choice of words. It's only an "illness" in that the brain's gender identity doesn't match the body. In women with a female gender identity, this is obviously not an "illness".

It more like their physical sex is a birth defect, if that makes sense. Since you can't change the brain's gender identity, you change what *can* be changed (the body) to match.

It's something that needs to be treated in one of several ways. But it DOES need to be treated.

That's insulting to transgender people everywhere....but I suspect you know that and don't care.

Well since he murdered someone, let him save up for it, even if it takes 20yrs on an extremely low prison salary. He's a lifer so he has the time. Or better yet, let him ask for donations.

IMO ... a sex change is just cosmetic surgery regardless of how upset or different that person feels without it. There is no guarantee that a sex change will fill any void or fix any mental illness.
