A Louisiana police officer suggested in a Facebook post last week that Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) should be shot, mocking her as a “vile idiot.”

On Thursday, Greta officer Charlie Rispoli wrote that the congresswoman “needs a round, and I don’t mean the kind she used to serve,” according to NOLA.com, which first reported the remarks.

The comment was written in response to a phony news article Rispoli shared that falsely accused Ocasio-Cortez of saying, “We pay soldiers too much.” On Wednesday, fact-checking site Snopes.com debunked that story as a fake.

Asked by NOLA.com for a reaction to Rispoli’s now-deleted post, Chief Arthur Lawson called it “disturbing,” but did not see it as a threat.

“I will tell you this: This will not go unchecked,” he told the outlet. “I’m not going to take this lightly and this will be dealt with on our end. It’s not something we want someone that’s affiliated with our department to make these types of statements. That’s not going to happen.”

Neither Ocasio-Cortez’s office nor the police department immediately responded to HuffPost’s request for comment.

This police officer is way out of line. He shouldn't be a cop anymore.

This kind of behavior by "officers" such as him puts all police in danger.

I don't see why police would support Trump, or why Trump would support police departments. The Trump party is anti-union which would include the police unions. The Trump party is against all socialism of any kind. Since police departments are taxpayer funded, they are a form of socialism. So by that logic, police departments should be abolished.

Why is that ? He human, he’s entitled to an opinion. It doesn’t mean he’s going to do it. He probably shouldn’t have posted it.

Well seeing as how the Secret Service often investigates perceived threats against those in gov't like the president & congress, it wasn't the brightest career move for a police officer.

Saying someone should be shot and say I’m going to shoot that mf’er are two different things.

However some opinions are best kept to yourself, or verbally amongst friends.

Saying Superman is better than Batman is an opinion, saying someone needs a bullet is not. just wondering, if you told your boss that he needs a bullet, do you think you'ed keep your job?

    Read my post...

Then again, with Trump in office and a lot of people working, replacing me would be difficult.

Also AOC is not my boss.

I’m not looking to shoot anybody.

If I said the boss needs a bullet, who knows. If I said I was going to do it, I’d probably get shot first. The thing is I’m not an idiot.

    How’s that answer ?

The police officer should definitely be investigated at the very least to inconvenience him. Even if his language was just “figurative” it’s not appropriate to suggest the killing/harm of an innocent person, period. If you disagree with someone’s politics debate their policy, not their life.

That said, I’m not sure why this is newsworthy. Politicians get hate messages and death threats routinely. I’ve overheard similar things about many other politicians, right and left.

Here’s an interesting graph, though these are prosecutions, which doesn’t necessarily equal the number of threats.

In my country, suggesting to kill someone would get you fired on the spot and no chance to become a policeman ever again. Such an individual cannot be trusted to protect citizens.

People of all stripes say stupid things now and again. It's entirely human, even in 'your country', I suspect. Clearly this cop put his foot in his mouth and should be reprimanded verbally, and the world should move on. Nothing to see here, folks.

That said, since we're on the topic, how is this materially different from certain people publicly and loudly advocating to 'punch a Nazi in the face'?

As a human being, you are entitled to have your opinion. That does not mean that an opinion like this shouldn’t have repercussions on your job.

He’s not working at a Starbucks. He’s a policeman and that comes with responsibility and accountability towards taxpayers. To be sure, here there are rigorous psychological tests before someone is even allowed to enroll in police academy. So the probability of something like that happening is rather low.

If someone said they would punch a nazi in the face, nothing would happen (keep in mind that in Europe nazism is associated with events still fresh in people’s minds). However, if they said they would kill the nazi, they would likely be fired as well.

    1) hopefully the cop will get fired, although I think that it will be a legal challenge as his will probably be considered an opinion under 1A.

    2) to answer your question, it’s just to distract us from the fact that virtually no meaningful legislation is passing.

Neither of which should be tolerated, particularly within the ranks of people who carry guns as part of their occupation.

Yet shockingly, in the rush to defend such a person, that point was amazingly missed.

If people kept filling AOC and the rest of the squad with rounds, they’d be too drunk and sick to be propagandizing so much.
