Mac Messages show up as phone numbers instead of person's name

Not sure what's going on. I have all of these people in my contacts. Most of them also use iPhones. On my iPhone, nearly all of them show up with their names but on my iPad and my MacBook Pro and Mac Pro, some of them show up only as phone numbers. And it's not consistent. One person shows up as their name on my iPhone and Macs but only as a number on my iPad. I have tried logging out of the Messenger App, quitting it, then launching it again and re-logging in, but that did not solve the problem. Any ideas how to fix this?

Which service (google, apple, or..?) are you using for your contacts?

Is there a mix of both services?

It might be that you think all your contacts are in icloud, but some years ago you used other provider for this (like hotmail, google or yahoo). My wife had this happen to her, she thougth every contact was on icloud when in reality about 60% of them (the older contacts in her list) were in hotmail/live.

When she upgraded her iphone the list of contacts was incomplete, until she added her live.com account.

Have you checked on your mobile devices if you have contacts synced with other accounts (not icloud)?
