Hopefully soon, there are a number of bugs that keep Panther from being an awesome OS upgrade such as DHCP not issuing and releasing addresses like it should, Backup not working, and a number of application incompatibilities and instabilities.

Data Corruption

I find it interesting that the fix for the fw800 data corruption issue is coming from Oxford, NOT from Apple. I wonder if all the tech rags that dumped on Apple for this problem will update the stories to reflect the fact that the fix was Oxford firmware, not Panther patches.

No sight of a 7Cxxx build on ADC, yet.

Could IOStorage have anything to do with fixing the Firewire bug? If it does, that would really make a lot of people happy.

That was my thinking all along. If this was an "Apple problem" why then are the fixes coming in the form of firmware updates to the drives from the manufacturers and not as OS fixes from Apple? Of course the tech rags aren't following up on this aspect of it, their entire agenda was to make Apple look bad anyway.

i personally hope they do something about networking, because the new way panther does it, is a pain in the ass
Would you care to elaborate on this? From what I have seen, "the way Panther does it" is that it actually works.. I never got reliable Windows->Mac networking to work for more than a day or two with Jaguar.

I've had a problem with using the network every since upgrading to Panther. The DHCP won't release and obtain a new address itself, instead, I have to choose manual and whenever the internet stops working, I have to type in a random IP address to get it to work again.

no problems here. networking is actually really good -- windows (samba) and afs actually works infinitely better than jaguar, and no problems with DHCP here at all. nor any problems with application incompatibility, and i even copied over mostly all of my apps from my jaguar backup, and they still work fine.

I actually just had to call Apple up about Activity Monitor not running. I just had to run Disk Utility and that corrected the permissions. But what I wanted to make note of is the tech guy I talked to said "good" when I told him I did a clean install of Panther.

Those who are having problems how did you install panther?

Lets hope they address some issues.

I find Mail keep crashing, and loosing preferences.

I loose preferences generally

Safari often crashes...

I have happily sent back details to Apple when each App crashes since it asks me to do so.

considering there are yearly upgrade to the OS, i just assume wait for 10.4 and try to save some money. but from what i hear, 10.3.1 will be welcomed.

I LOVE panthers and have had no absolutely no problems except safari crashes A LOT, Id say about 3 times a day, doesnt sound like a lot but it is when Im used to it nothing on my mac ever crashing and Im not just using little browse and write apps but more like photoshop, xcode, maya,...

I installed fresh on an erased disk (internal TiBook/550) and I could only access the house network (three Macs behind a Linux server and DSL modem). It's very odd, but I just turned on Internet Sharing on another Mac, which was only upgraded, not even Archive&Install, and works fine-- G4 733.
Other than that....

I had a LOT of problems with Panther

I did a clean install. In fact since I had only had the powerbook for about 2 weeks before I got Panther I didn't even bother restoring anything. I just did clean installs of the apps I had for it.

My issues were:

Mac->windows network just plain didn't work, I lost my mail prefs twice, and suffered through file corruptions in my home directory. Pictures and files editing with "vi" seemed especially vunerable to becoming corrupted.

A couple of days ago I lost ALL of my preferences, backrounds, settings, finder icon sizing, everything. I got desperate and turned off File Vault.

Since then I have have had 0 problems with anything and my Samba stuff is working fine.

Kitty-kitty purrrrrrrrrs

It seems as if I should consider myself very lucky! I installed (clean) Panther on the 24th. Ever since then it's been 90% perfect. The only instance of it not being flawless was when I installed the first security update. My DHCP was schizo once I rebooted from the update. A reset of the router and modem and a reboot of my mac and all was well again! That has been the one and only problem I've had with the OS or any other programs.

Admittedly I was prepared for ANYthing considering I installed on the very night it was released. I am really sorry for the people Panther seems to be covering up in the litter box. :( Hope you all get scooped out soon!

 Yeah, I don't get enough sleep.

Are you nearly out of hard-drive space?

I think we can assume that the modifications to Terminal are the same as the latest security update, as each point release includes all these. I desperately want to see improved nVidia drivers (who doesn't) and the few Expose bugs ironed out.

I hope that this application crash reporting works out, in the few few weeks (months?) it won't be as good because many apps broken by Panther will crash, but after it all settles down it could prove to be a very valuble tool to Apple. What about the "silent" crashes, shouldn't they be reported too?
