Arctic Silver 5

Thank You!

Somewhere between Here and There
Hello everyone, although I come from distant China, but this excellent Mac forum gave me a great help, I upgraded Mac Pro 2010 reading posts on the forum a lot of seniors, and everyone's discussions, first of all thank you!

Then share with my Mac Pro 2010 upgrade process

I have a Mac Pro 2010 Mid standard configuration machine, configured X5620 2.4G * 2, memory 6GB ECC, the object is to upgrade my X5690, see our discussions in the forums, there are two main problems:

- After upgrading X5690, 130W thermal power, power can assume
- Whether the original radiator to ensure stable operation of the system, and allow the CPU to maintain a healthy temperature

The first question I think of Mac Pro 950w power supply should be able to assume power problems, the second question, I really was not sure before the upgrade, but I do try, the final result I think it is possible, after the upgrade, the first X5690 temperature, thickness of the machine running for some time, kept at 45 degrees Celsius, and 5620 similar. The second teeth X5690 temperature will be lower, probably only 35 degrees Celsius, is completely in the healthy range.

When video rendering full load test, the first one X5690 temperature reaches hovering between 64 to 66 degrees Celsius, the fan speed of 1,500 rpm, the noise at this time still in the acceptable range. Second teeth X5690 temperature about 50 degrees, so I think, Mac Pro 2010 Mid fully upgraded X5690.

It is worth mentioning that my server in the hands of domestic, buy two new stock CPU, about $ 250 each tablet, the price is quite a bargain, remember last year's price of around 500 dollars, in short, I think this is a super upgrade values.

Next is my upgrade process:

X5690 CPU just received today

IMG_1642.JPG
Well, the upgrade starts out CPU motherboard

IMG_1643.JPG
IMG_1644.JPG
Loosen the screws, remove the radiator, using the cleaning kit to clean the thermal grease, won the old CPU

IMG_1645.JPG
Also clean the radiator

IMG_1646.JPG
Put X5690 CPU!

IMG_1647.JPG
Apply Arctic Silver 5

Then reinstall the radiator, everything is going well, the 2010 Mac Pro 2009 models not so much trouble, do not need to add 2mm shim, do not need to solve the heat problem booster thick, but do not worry about damage to the board, I feel very good!

Well, the successful installation is complete, tighten the screws after the radiator, the motherboard back into the chassis, this moment very excited, I know there will be no problem, because everything is very smooth installation, unless CPU is bad, otherwise, I believe The upgrade will not be any other than, really, to hear the startup sound familiar. At this point, the upgrade process is completed.

But there is a small episode in the time to come up with the motherboard, I do not accidentally knock the radiator to the corner of the display, the result was a knock out of the pits, apple thermal radiator indeed very fast, but it also is very thin ! Although not affect the use, but it is affecting mood, you must be careful, please!

Let's look at the bump to the heat sink:

Look carefully, there is a small pit

Well, upgrade success!

Then the performance increase how much?

Place the piece before and after the upgrade, Geekbench3 test scores:

It is still very good, right?

Add: I ordered 64G DDR3 1333 REG ECC memory, have not received, so this result is just 6G DDR 1333 ECC results, I believe that after upgrading the memory, the score will be further improved.

Well, I share it here, you probably do not understand what I'm saying, please use the translation software now
