My mac pro 2009 starting doing something weird. Everything is working normally as far as I can tell however the temps seems to be off the charts. I was wondering if someone could help me resolve potential issues I am unable to find. Attaching info of the mac and the temps from istat.

Your temperature looks fine to me. I am quite sure all the readings are in degree F, not degree C.

Your main fan noise is coming from the PCIe slot. Are you running some graphic intensive job? Anyway, the fan speed is also in the normal range.

However, if there is no loading in any PCIe card but have that reading. Usually that means something wrong about SMC. You may perform a SMC reset. Or, in most of the time, simply use iStat to set all the fans to Max speed. Wait few seconds, let it spin up. And than set all the fans back to it's minimum speed will fix the problem. (It may take few minutes for the fans to spin down, especially the PCIe fan).

I may have found the problem. I have a aftermarket video card (ATI Radeon HD5770). It has been already replaced once due to overheating and I think this replacement is just about to go too. I've had it for 6 months now only.

When I removed it from the system and used the original GT120 everything is back to normal with the fans.

I don't think I want the same video card. Any suggestions if I may ask? thx.

I posted nearly the same question as you a little while ago; its due to the firmware and your 3rd party graphics card, Apple knows the problem and won't sort it.

Official Apple cards don't have this problem :(
