    Hi,

Since updating my Mac Pro 5,1 to 10.14.4 i have started seeing kernel panics occasionally when the Mac goes to sleep.

Had 0 issues until I applied the update.

I've tried installing the combo update but that didn't help. Wondering if it could be related to Fusion VM's I have running in the background.

Have tried searching the net (including the VMware forums) for other people experiencing issues since the update but have turned up nothing.

I'm confident it's not a hardware issue given I experienced 0 issues prior to the update. I'm not to the point when I'm considering re-installing MacOS though I don't want to waist my time if it's an easy fix.

    Would appreciate any help.

When you have NMI errors with dual trays, the first thing to check is the CPU tray northbridge rivets, when the rivets are damaged people see lots of NMI errors when KP occurs.

Btw, NMI KPs are usually a symptom of something wrong with the hardware or very low level drivers.

Have you done this yet ?

    (1) Remove all PCIe cards except your Metal supported GPU.

(1.2) Ideally now you should ONLY have the target install drive present

    (2) reset SMC= shut down & remove the power cable for 5 or 10 minutes.

    (3) NVRAM reset = wait for the " Happy Mac" chime FOUR times.

    (4) Install El Capitan or High Sierra

( 4.1 ) Put your FULL install of 10.14.4 in the Applications folder in El Capitan or High Sierra
    ============================================

Congratulations ! you now have a virgin cMP install of El Capitan or High Sierra ( I'd go for HS )

    ============================================

    (4) Do a FULL install of 10.14.4

    (4.1) Don't install any non-Apple apps. . .

    (5) Give your cMP some long-time tasks to fulfill for a day or so ( if your time constraints allow ).

    ==================================
if you are still getting Kernel panics then as least we know exactly where you Max OS-wise.

I'm reasonably confident that a 100% virgin-re-install may either cure the problem or give you more, useful, informative, intuitive concise info regarding the panics. I know how that feels.
    I haven't had a KP I couldn't fix since Yosemite

I wish you good learning & ultimate success. :)

Having the exact same problem. Glad to see, I am not alone - but also strange, that not many owners of that machine (mac pro flashed 4,1 -> 5,1) seem to have this problem. Been search for 2 weeks now for a solution, but nothing cured the issue. What GPU do you have? Mine is a Zotac GTX 680 4GB, flashed with EFI firmware. Reflashing with the original gpu firmware didnt help.

Reistalled macOS on a new SSD. System sleeps/wakes without problems until 10.14.3. After installing 10.14.4, when it tries to sleep 80% of the time (so not always) it seems to crash. The power led goes into the pulsating sleep mode as expected, but the mac pro does not turn off and is unresponsive. Have to press the power switch for >5s too turn it off.

Here is the panic log. What other infos do you need? Hope this gets fixed with nex macOS update.. :(

    GTX 680 with Mac EFI
    --- Post Merged, Apr 5, 2019 ---
    @racingralph

Interesting you are seeing similar issues though my behavior is different. I'm only seeing it 20% of the time when it goes to sleep and when it happens the power light flashes for about 20 to 30 seconds and then the system kernel panics and then automatically restarts.

Your kernel panic is a little different to mine. I notice you had virtual box running in the kernel report you pasted. Are you only seeing this issue when you have VM's running?

As i understand my mac is a genuine 5,1 (not 4,1 > 5,1). How can I tell for sure?

Another note, I did a clean install using DosDude's installed as I could not get around the but the prevents clean install with the GTX 680. Can anyone advise if this could be a root cause?

    cheers-

What is the BootROM version? That’s easiest way to tell 5,1 or 4,1>5,1.

GTX 680 Mac Edition was kind of funky when I swapped back in earlier this week. No KPs but not as smooth as last Mojave test with that GPU, no where near as good as RX580.

    Does installing 10.14.3 resolve issues?
    Does clean install fix anything?

    SMC, not BootROM version.

I have SMC version of 1.39f5.

In 'About this mac' it read 'Mac Pro (Early 2009)', if it is a 4,1, even if it is flashed to a 5,1.

Unfortunately I cannot test with an alternative GPU. The only one I have here is a NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 - sleep is not working at all, when this, officially under Mojave unsupported card is installed.
Interesting, we bot have same GPU, but at the GTX-680 thread, no one talks about that problem.

Another strange thing since 10.14.4: Fan noise of the mac pro is considerably louder. Before it was almost impossible to hear the fans.

I ran the Apple Hardware Test and it found one error.

    aht.jpg

This is a temp sensor on the north bridge. Not sure if that causes the problems and if that is the case, why it didnt cause any issues before 10.14.4.
This plastic clip is missing in my mac pro, like in this photo, there are some threads about this issue on macrumors forum, so I hope I can fix that missing part somehow:

Thanks for all the help so far.

I have installed a fresh copy of Mojave 10.14.4 on a spare SSD. After putting the Mac to sleep over 10 times I was unable to replicate the issue. However, per my initial post I have a feeling this could be related to VM's running via Fusion, Parallels etc. At this point I haven't had a chance to test further with VM's running.

@racingralph Do you still have these problems without VM's running? I notice in your panic report you have virtualbox running.

This may help, it works perfectly with my spare DUAL CPU tray. Post #23 https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/mojave-kernel-panic-quadro-k5000.2176418/#post-27265081

PS : It looks like you have an original 5,1 cMP. single or dual CPU ? Make a .sig file - mine is at the bottom of my reply.

If you have a KP with NMI errors, shutdown your Mac Pro and check the CPU tray northbridge heatsink, most of the time you will find that the rivets are broken, like you found.

Unfortunately it seems I have destroyed the North Bridge of my mac pro. Was trying to fix the heatsink issue from post #15, so disassembled the whole north bridge and cleaned it with iso propanol (to remove old thermal paste). All looked perfect, then reassembled it and put it back in the chassis.
Now it does not boot anymore - stays stuck at the Apple logo. The Apple Hardware Test can be started, but says it has only 1 cpu and no memory. Report error 'TCAC--4.864'.

Hardware handicraft work with the mac pro seems to be a special art, not comparable to PC hardware hacking, where I never destroyed any parts. :)

I hope I will be able to my hands on an other mac pro. Irony is that 50m from my place there is an Apple dealer, who has around 20-30 old mac pros in his basement, but wont sell anything, wants to throw all the stuff on the trash.

Thanks for all your kind support.

    1. You could have over tightened the CPU heatsinks . . please give us more info & pics.

    2. How about your internal diagnostic LEDS etc.

    3. What condition were the Northbridge spring rivets in ?

    4. Is the RAM correctly installed ? Try putting just eg: 8 gb RAM on CPU A. No RAM on CPU B.

omg. Thanks a lot @MIKX for giving spirint not to give up!! After I read your reply, I disassembled everything again.. and... there was 1 of this metal pins (there are thousands) in the CPU socket bend into the wrong direction. Perhaps I did that when removing dust with a brush.
Using a magnifying glass I was able to bend it back into the original position. Reassembly it and voila Mac pro is booting again.

Even the AHT is now passing! :)

Question 3: One of the rivets was missing, don't know when and how that thing got lost (I am the 3rd owner of that machine). I removed the old rivet and exchanged it with a chipset rivet from a regular pc. It does not deliver the same force (Apple rivet has mach stronger spring). But imho its enough. AHT does not moan about the heatsink, and in iStat I now get Northbridge TDiode Temperature (78 degress celsius, 172.4 degrees Fahrenheit).

So - imho a huge step further, this is a machine now, which seems to be free of hardware faults.

I triggered a sleep via the Apple menu once, and it didn't turn of, but also didn't crash, was able to get back to the OS by pressing space bar.
Have to investigate more on the sleeping issue, which is the topic of that thread. Will try OP solution, by installing fresh 10.14.4.

@dgarratt: I also tried it with a fresh vanilla osx install, without vbox installation and it also crashed. Have a panic report here, which I could post.

Will make more tests, when I have more time.

Thanks for all.. mac pro story is not over.. :!

@racingralph glad to hear your MacPro lives on!

If you could post the kernel panic from your vanilla install that would be great.

Did a @MIKX vanlilla install from post #3, but still the same behaviour, it crashes, when going to sleep.:( I suspect the gpu zotac gforce gtx-680 is causing the problem.
Tried it under High Sierra, and sleep/wake works perfect, if not on 10.14.4. Here is the panic report from the vanilla install:

I meet the same problem since I upgrade to 10,14.4. My gpu is rx 480. I think it is not relate to graphic card.
I have vm ware installed, but before installed that application , it restart from sleep as well. I do think it is a software bug.
