Such a hard choice:
I'm in same boat here like others trying to decide. So i priced this out:
mac mini: 32gb unified mem, 512gb ssd, 10gb ethernet, logic pro. => $1999.99
mac studio: same as above: $2198.99

Why wouldn't i go with the mac studio?

At 71 years of age, either will take me into heaven LOL. Being a mac guy from day 1, really need to upgrade from my early 2010-2015 macs: Macbook Air, Imac 4k retina, Imac, and mac mini.

Not really the average user, since my use is music DAWs, electronic drum design, 3d Modeling, coding (retired as hardware/software engineer), and typical everyday stuff. I really DO NOT do any video editing.

I understand all the pros and cons of each, but still a very tough choice 🙄
any thought would be appreciated.. 🤔

Do you have the issue with fan noise?
If you mean the 'whine' then no, mine doesn't whine at all. There's a very slight sound from the fan but I have it mounted under my desk so it's effectively inaudible. I can hear the whine on videos people post so it's not my hearing.

Please don't believe the claims that every Studio whines because it's frankly ********.

If I had to choose right this second, I would pick the mini. That HDMI port gives me more flexibility down the line and GPU is irrelevant to your use case. There might also be other limitations lurking in an M1 Mac, such as support for a future Apple Pro Display, that are less likely to exist in an M2 Mac.

Once the Studio is updated to M2, I would hands down choose the Studio.

If I made the choice right now, I would go with the mini, no doubt about it. $200 is $200 you can spend on something else, and the mini will be a little faster single thread and minor multitasking. The mini will be quieter even if you get a Studio that doesn't have the whine.

I'm the owner of Mac Studio Max that has the whine...

Even with the small price difference, I‘d go for the Mac Studio any day;

- It runs quiet - I have personally never heard the whine or any fan noise,
- I actually use the 10GbE Ethernet - I have 2Gig Internet,
- I have 64GB RAM and I use it, and
- It has more ports.

Looks like the studio will feature M2. Its funny because i was at the apple store last week. I was asking about mini m2 pro vs studio m1. He said the studio has the m2. What? Baffled what he said. Yep they upgraded the studio in the store. So i guess its true.
But going back there to verify

The quality of knowledge of Apple Store staff has been on the decline. I remember in the earlier days of Apple retail, when every Apple Store employee was an enthusiast and you could talk shop with. These days, they're just Best Buy employees with a different shirt. Many don't know what they're talking about.

The Mac Studio most definitely does not have an M2. They were probably confusing it with the updated Mac Mini.

@Mac4EverDrummer, you'll know through your life experience as an Apple enthusiast yourself that stores don't get to announce upcoming unannounced products and don't even know about them until the public does.

I remember when picking my max studio up the apple employee waxing lyrically on about how will last me ten year.

went rather quiet when asked did that mean Apple would continue to provide OS Support for 10 years as I use fcp x and that is notorious that updates only on the latest OS for fcp x.

I have entirely given up on the so-called experts you find in ANY electronics stores; Apple, Best Buy, The Source, or Visions. They are ALL a bunch of Muppets that know less than a wet door. I can't count the times I have overheard advice given that literally is not possible or goes against everything right...

The best example was a girl in front of me at the Apple store, and she explained her MacBook was acting up on login, and it was much slower than the used to be. The "Genius" advised her it was likely due to a virus because she clicked a link in an email, and that he would likely have to run a backup, reinstall macOS and then the applications, and that if she wanted to, he could attempt to run a backup of her data onto a USB stick (at an extra charge because she had to buy the USB stick). It would be a day or two for him to do that work. She was in tears as she was using the MacBook for school and was really worried she had lost her papers etc. That's all I overheard, and she was still there when I left the Apple shop.

One of my very best friends works as an iPhone pro at a shop and apple makes its store employees do very unpleasant things that have gotten increasingly bad in the past few years. This combined with the fact that they are not privy to anything new being released (as they have to push the old stuff out the door) I am constantly surprised anyone wants to work there... this is beside the fact that many customers at the apple stores are less than pleasant to deal with.

So this person made a mistake and might have worked double shifts... who knows.
