Just want to share the joy of 8GB adventure.

I bought Kingston KVR1333D3S9/4G - 4GB PC3 - 10600 CL9 204 - Pin SODIMM

First boot: I zapped PRAM twice. OS X loads up, fan was 6000 rpm and slowly back to 2000rpm.

So far so good. Very happy.

Thanks MacRumors!

PS. I read someone went KP using 1333 MHz memory like mine. I just watched 5-10 starcraft2 replays with the fastest speed. Fan went crazy like a NASA shuttle taking off, but no KP so far.

LoL, with the similar cost for KVR and the Hynix, i went for Hynix. Do your KVR Rams pass thru the memtest, them being at 1333MHz? and does your MB have the increase performance with 1333MHz comparing iBench Results with similar setup?

P.S. NASA shuttle (Space?) get launched by rockets, they can only land?;)

How much KVR cost you in locals? I paid around USD $81 (total: 2 pieces of 4GB)
Actually I haven't test anything. Where can I download the right memtest for mac? I'll test the ibench.

PPS Haha you're an attention to detail person.

ibench test result

here are mine. Try removing the battery and run the tests... may catch you by surprise. thou i don't know why...

and here are my Xbench score: 204.75
very similar score as Ray's Xbench score: 207.04
similar SSD, similar RAM i believe.

comparing like with like, i could say, a larger SSD seems to give better results.

My 8GB arrived today from RamCity.com.au (just ordered the ram for the 2009 13" model not the late 2008, 13" as they had the same chipset but one was re labelled the pro that was all). Working perfectly fine with no issues under load.

Time to stick my old 4gb into the MacMini hooked up to the TV.

Even if something does go astray and it starts screwing up i can just pull one stick and run it in single channel until i work out the problems. Its not like its going to run that much worse like that.
:D

I'm very happy to confirm that the
Crucial kit:
2x4GB Crucial 204-PIN DDR3 PC3-8500 CT51264BC1067

Works with my MacBook 5.1 too.

What happens if I want to reset my macbook and I have 8gb ram installed?

Hi,

I've been willing to update the ram of my macbook 5,1 for some time now, and I just realised that there are lots of threads and comments that say that it will run great and without problems with 8gb as long as the version of the software is snow leopard and the Boot rom version is MB51.007D.B03 (whatever that means).

I know that I have both now, but I was wondering if I reset my computer, it will go back to leopard, till I install snow leopard, and I don't know whether the computer will be working if I do that.

You'll have to excuse me if it is a silly question, but I'm nowhere near a computer expert.

Thanks a lot for your answers!

You can use Snow Leopard install disc directly instead of Leopard first.

RAM doesn't really help boost benchmark numbers. I don't get why people run these tests like they expect them to.

Trail and Error? seeing what the MB is capable of taking?
I don't get why people criticize what other's find.
I don't get why people are so smart but wouldn't make any useful comments by stating what the 1333MHz RAM would or would not do over the 1066MHz.:apple:

Final Cut Pro is running very slow

UPDATE: So I did some investigating and I think it's something else entirely. The RAM upgrade appears to work just fine for me. My Final Cut Pro seems to be slowing down for another reason entirely.

So I tried this upgrade. I had the correct boot ROM version and everything, but when I try to edit video in Final Cut Pro (the most recent release before the forthcoming Final Cut Pro X) I have the "beachball" pop up for at least 10 seconds each time before finally playing a clip. Sometimes the program freezes entirely.

Did I do something wrong?

Very interested in upgrading my MBP 5,1 to 8GB of RAM.

But with the OSX Lion on the horizon, what's the likelihood of running into problems with Lion?

Only if you have fear of Lions.

No problem at all, having more RAM will actually allow better performance.

It might be better for you to post this question about FCP on the specific forum for it, many other MR members could help you with that. I do not use it, so no clue about it.

I updated my macbook alum and it's running pretty smooth. Multitasking is much better and I can have multiple programs open without lagging and such.

I ran across this site which became pretty useful as I was upgrading.

http://shoppingdood.com/article/110610/ram-upgrade-apple-macbook-aluminum-unibody

Just curious though, how many of you thinks it runs a bit warmer than before the upgrade?

Been running this for a few days now without any issues.

I'm running Photoshop CS5 and Flash CS5 concurrently and multiple browsers windows open while I'm doing some web work and am not seeing any noticeable lag.

I still believe it does run a little warmer than before but it's not affect any performance.

Success

Upgraded my unibody MacBook 5,1 (bootrom version MB51.007D.B03) to 8 GB about a week ago. I installed some Corsair sticks: CMSA8GX3M2A1066C7 (Corsair DDR3 SO-DIMM 1066MHz 8GB Mac). I have tested - as thoroughly as I can be bothered to - with all 8 gigs utilized (ran tons of Chrome-tabs/windows, partial Memtest and a VM, at the same time).

I had an initial crash/lockup, but I think I can safely attribute the cause to software. It happened during a VM boot, directly after a Parallels Desktop update (without rebooting the computer) combined with me changing memory allocation for the very same VM that I then booted. No problems of any sort since that.

Current uptime: 3 days and 22 hours (I rarely reboot, use it "docked" as my main/desktop). Current free memory: 2,97 GB

Nice upgrade, gave this computer a new lease on life for me, my typical usage is quite memory laden.

Thinking about upgrading my MacBook5,1 (late '08 aluminium unibody) from 2x2GB to 2x4GB. I have the correct firmware "MB51.007D.B03" and I'm currently running the Lion GM on 64bit.

I read somewhere that you had to run SL, but I really like Lion, and want to buy it. So, I'm going to get a couple of 4GB sticks tomorrow and try them out on Lion before buying the final release. If they work, that's great but if not then I'll just downgrade to SL :)

Looking at buying 2x4GB sticks on eBay (£50/$80).
They are "Hynix DDR3 4GB 4 GB SODIMM-PC 1066 PC3-8500 CL7 RAM"

Hopefully, I have no problems with it!

Fingers crossed!

would like to know your results. got basically the same hardware setup as yours.

No problem! I might not get the RAM sticks until next week, but sure I'll post back here as soon as I upgrade it :)

I have actually downgraded from Lion GM back to SL 10.6.8, I find Lion still rather buggy and I think I'll wait for 10.7.1 :)

EDIT* Okay, I just found out that my Macbook5,1 with SL 10.6.8 can't boot into 64bit!? What's the deal!? Have I just wasted £50 on 8GB ram that I can't use?

i am at 10.6.7 64bit 8GB ram... i fear the SSD slow down probs with the 10.6.8 upgrade. they must have changed the EFI at 10.6.8. since there is no hardware change.,and unless you are using apple's SSD (which i doubt) not much to benefit from 10.6.8. if you want a working boot.efi from 10.6.7 (off me), leave your contact, happy to zip it for you, i have put my efi on a MB7,1 that has made the 7,1 in 64bit too. however even at 32bit, all 8GB will still register as 8GB...
