probably not in a while? If the new models tomorrow still have an optical drive, I'd take it out and replace it with a decent SSD for speed and some extra storage.

    On the fence
Not all of them use Hitachi, some use Seagate, and mine came with a Fujitsu drive. They currently don't offer any 750GB drive, so I wouldn't expect that soon. Plus I wouldn't buy it from apple, I'd upgrade myself to save money.

I installed my own 7k500 for 1/2 the cost of apple's upgrade.

    Upgraded w/750GB 7K750

I have a mid-2009 mbp whose 250GB Toshiba crapped out over a period of a couple days.

After looking around at reviews, I decided to replace it with the Hitachi 750GB Travelstar 7K750 (7200RPM,16MB Cache).

I did a clean install of Lion (old drive had been upgraded several times from Snow Leopard to Leopard to Lion) and have found so far that the 7K750 is quieter, a little bit cooler, and much faster than the old 5400rpm drive - very happy with the purchase.

I would recommend this drive to anyone considering an upgrade to the mbp.

^^^ nice to hear. I just bought this drive a few days ago. It'll deliver today. Can't wait to throw it in my new MBP!

For those who have the Hitachi 7k750, what kind of "spin up" noise do you have? I recently installed one in my Optibay (have ssd in the main bay). The actual seek/write sounds are hardly if at all noticeable, but just the regular hard drive being spun up is very loud IMHO. At first I thought it was the fans running loudly, but then realized it's the HD and will go away after it spins down. I'm curious if you notice the same thing.
