Mail proxy settings

One of my friends has a macbook pro and she uses a POP3 email account with Mac Mail.

As she is on the student network at university, there is a proxy server which blocks things such as MSN Messenger and Mail (apparently).

Is there a way to get round the problem with Mail not working (i.e. a different port she could try or proxy exceptions or something)?
