I like it, it differentiates enough from the standard lineup so the people who get the 8 and 8 Plus don't feel like they are getting something inferior to what they are use to. I also like how we are slowly inching away from the numbering system, that had to go eventually. I suspect next year they'll drop the numbering all together. Also, this makes things consistent with the watch.

This makes so much sense it seems silly that we've been calling one version the 7s.
Yeah, indeed. Especially since the (what we have been calling until now) '7s' has a brand new design and major new features like wireless charging. Everything points to a bigger upgrade than 6->6s and also bigger than 6s->7.

Ha! It's a way of saying, dont cry 7S buyers, this model is inferior to the X but don't worry, we will change the name to make you feel a little bit better.

Yeah this really does make sense and seem the most logical from a marketing perspective. Calling the iPhone 7 successors 8 instead of 7S will do wonders for sales even with the presence of the "Edition" model being here this time around. Now we just need to find out what color front panels the Edition models are going to sport. I really think they'll embrace the ears and go with White/Silver, White/Brush Gold, and Black/Black. Apple just loves it's white panels...

Actually it makes very little sense to me. Breaking the long established pattern by calling any model the "iPhone 8" even though this is an "s" year only makes sense if they're at least going to do it for the radically re-designed model. Having the iPhone 6, ,6s, 7, and 8 all have the same basic form would be weird.

If it has an home button instead of relying on swipes and gestures, and TouchID, while still having the same chip and even RAM as the "iPhone edition", people who choose this phone may not need the consolation that you think.

This is exactly how I feel. Yes the iPhone “edition” will be OLED, but without touchid or a home button...

The “7s” or “8” will have everything I love about an iPhone ... and have the same processor and RAM as the “edition”... so if I choose the “regular” Plus model I won’t be whining
