Making Mail more 'aggressive'

For some bizarre reason, Mail is too 'weak' when trying to check for new mail.

I have Parallels running and Outlook Express picks up new mail easily....Mail just keeps coming back with the exclamation icon, saying it can't see the server ( Outlook and Mail aren't running at the same time ).

Is there any way to get Mail to 'man up' and do it's job...I know my link is very slow, but it should still work....
