That's just really depressing. I don't however believe in the death penalty. He should defiantly be locked up in prison (or mental institute?) for the rest of his life without the chance to be allowed back into society.

And which "procedure" do you consider most cruel??

And we are off and running to PRSI.

He sounds mentally ill. A mental hospital is where he needs to go.

Why kill him? Let him suffer in prison for the rest of his life.

Read the article on the NYT about this. One of the more bizarre things I've read about in a while.

Looks like it was an ex-boyfriend - and he has turned himself in.

I agree. I think this guy is crazy but not as crazy as the talk about letting John Hinckley Jr. free. Though I am against the death penalty, I can see where people are for the death penalty when people like Hinckley, or worse, are released.

Although I am generally against the death penalty (as innocent people have been executed many times) and I also don't believe two wrongs make a right, I do believe there are cases that warrant it, and this guy definitely warrants it.

Sadly he may get to spend the rest of his life inside a mental hospital instead of a prison.

my vote goes to execute this POS ... before next weekend would be nice.

he is not insane ... he knows the difference between right and wrong ... too bad we couldn't throw him to the Lions.

If the guy is crazy, then putting him in a regular prison endangers the inmates who are not crazy. I remember reading about a case brought against the state for putting such a crazy person in prison who killed an inmate. He slowly and deliberately struck another inmate countless number of times with a toilet plunger stick until that person was dead. When asked why he did it, he said a voice told him he was Jesus Christ.

I don't know if the alleged perp in this case is crazy or just very, very angry, but time will tell.

Assuming he's about the same age, that's just one more layer of bizarre. You usually hear about this kind of thing -- rarely, thank god -- with couples in their 20s or 30s. (I'm thinking specifically of people like the guy who threw acid in a woman's face.)

Horrible. My temptation is to throw in with those who say execute this guy. But there's gotta be something mentally wrong with him.

On what grounds do you think so? The action itself is not enough to determine whether or not he is mentally ill.

To my and the general collective's knowledge, burning a (presumably) innocent person alive reflects poorly on one's mental state.

Of course he has a screw loose. But he's not necessarily crazy enough to not be punished for what he did.

Putting him into a mental hospital is not necessarily a punishment but a way of treating whatever caused him to burn that woman.

That is the typical argument for the death penalty. The only problem with that way of thinking is it changes with society.

In the 1600-1800 era people were put to death for much lesser crimes. In the future people could be put to death for much lesser crimes. The line one draws changes with the wind.

Just lock them up forever with NO CHANCE of ever getting out. No matter what it costs.

In order to keep a semblance of a society with morals there can be no eye for an eye mentality.

You don't murder someone because they murdered someone.

I know. My point is that the only reason to put him through treatment instead of punishing him, requires that he was either unconscious, severely retarded, or suffering from schizophrenia or paranoia.
An eye for an eye, and the world goes blind. Ever heard of the Sicilian bull, btw?

maybe you could hire him to do odd jobs and steal things around your house when he gets out ...

IMO ... he is not worth taking a chance on and the only way to protect society from a monster like this is to exterminate him.
