is there a similar application to the ipod touch and iphone 'maps' app but for os x? i find Google earth to be a bit to much, and it cant change view to map instead of satellite.

I second Google Maps, you can just create a shortcut/alias to the website, even put your home address in first, then create a shortcut from that. Drag it to your preferred location, change the iCon (ha! had to use the 'i' on that one) and viola, a no install required map software.
The biggest thing I like about Google maps is the 'live' view. I read up on the initiative to get those pictures and MAN what a boring job that must have been, then again, getting paid for driving around doing nothing is kinda nice.
