In his latest campaign stop (at a Sturm Ruger manufacturing plant) Presidential candidate Marco Rubio claimed to have bought a gun on Christmas Eve

What a way to celebrate the Christian festival of love and peace. Of goodwill towards one's fellow man. Of comfort and joy.

His level of pandering is nauseating. He may have studied up to learn the issues but he comes off, to me at least, like a conman.

That last comment appears to be sarcastic. I'm curious, are you complaining about the guns or shopping on Christmas Eve? As regards firearms, government regulation knows no holiday. Additionally, purchasing gifts for others, as many may have been, certainly speaks towards goodwill. As regards shopping on Christmas Eve, I hope it was early in the day, while many would normally be working. If it was in the evening, I echo your disappointment that such a family oriented time of year was spent at a store.

Why are you suggesting that they are paranoid and panicked? As pending CA measures suggest, there appears to be a great drive to restrict and eliminate the 2A through regulation and state legislation, gaining buy-in by exempting police (suggesting that this will make the people more secure in protecting themselves), security personnel (avoiding complaints from celebrities), and grandfathers (avoiding the dreaded "gun grab" headline, for now). Why would others elsewhere see this and be concerned about a similar national effort?

Who was he buying a gun for? His children? Since he married his wife in 1998, none of them would be old enough to have one. And if not them - who, exactly, is it appropriate to give a gun to? I would think the "surprise" gift of a firearm is possibly the worst idea imaginable.

If one feels one wants or needs a firearm, should you not be present when one is selected? To make sure the weapon's weight; balance; and action is appropriate for you? To understand the pros and cons of the weapon selected? To make sure the grips feel comfortable; that you have a chance to understand what carrying and storage options it presents. That you can safely handle the recoil and safety mechanisms. Know how the sights work; how to safely load and unload it? Fire off a few rounds under the knowledgeable eye of a range instructor?

The fast of the matter is that Rubio's statement was pandering of the worst possible kind.

It trivializes; politicizes; and fetishizes the act of purchasing a firearm.

Despite the millions upon millions of new guns and gun owners, crime rates are still dropping (unless you live in a Democrat-controlled city, but let's face it, those thugs can't legally own weapons anyway!).

Gun ownership (not the number of guns) has been falling for 4 decades.

"Merry Christmas. As an act of goodwill, I'm giving this weapon you may use to shoot people with!"

As opposed to working through this family-oriented time of year. At least you can shop with your family.

As many gun owners, even on this board, have proclaimed, as soon as there is an ounce of fear that gun regulations will be tightened, there's a huge buying frenzy. That's the very definition of being paranoid and panicking.

Crime rates fell the most after the 1994 AWB, and went up a little after it was rescinded, but no one like to talk about that. Of course, the vast majority of the drop in crime rate is property crime, not violent crime.

Wait, I thought he and his ilk were saying how Obama was gonna come and take their guns (and a box of Possum Helper entree mix to go along with it).

Why waste the effort to buy one if them pesky socialists are gonna take it away? Especially when Rubio has a lot more to thank socialists FOR, as even Brietbrat pointed out:

    http://www.breitbart.com/big-govern...als-in-middle-of-americas-immigration-crisis/
(Gee, wrong for Obama to help illegals but a-ok for Rubio and Reagan to do so, got it...)

No more paranoid than all the cameras and Windows 10 installations?

My only problem with this is did he have to buy such a CRAP firearm, he should have bought a Sig or Glock or even a Walther.

    1) "Merry Christmas! As an act of goodwill, and as I know you enjoy shooting, I picked up this firearm and ammunition for you to enjoy. Since I know you personally and you have never given me reason to consider you a 4473 prohibited person, I expect you will be unlikely to seek opportunities to shoot people."

    2) Ah. Hadn't thought about it that way. I was thinking about the impact on employees having to work late on 12/24, not Rubio's family - you are right.

    3) Of course there is a frenzy. Mandatory confiscation is nearly impossible outside of CA - and even there it's a slog. If you can beat the passage/effective date, you get grandfathered.

I've got a build planned for later in the year. If there was hint that it would suddenly be banned, I'd move my timetable up to beat the deadline. It isn't panicked or paranoid, it's understanding how most of these laws look and beating the clock.

Are we not allowed to buy rifles for our kids now? I got a nice bolt action single shot 22 for Christmas when I was a youngster

I'll have a Ruger 10/22 under the tree for the kids when they turn 10. Jack boots be damned, but there is no issue with buying a rifle for your kids.

Not sure if you mean the insects or the ammunition:

The hornet is the one on the right in both images.

Honestly, I wouldn't want to encounter the sharp end of either.
