Dam... I hope that damage isn't that bad, but it being 8.9 I won't hold my breathe.

Yeah that tsunami is massive. There were burning buildings floating on the surge as it rolled inland.

    Not good at all.

God Bless everyone there. I am watching this live, and saw the surge just overrunning everything inland, including cars on the highway that couldn't move out of the way.

Hawaii is under a tsunami watch, but not the West Coast yet. There is a refinery on fire that is ready to explode and am seeing on the TV that people are on tops of roofs of houses flagging the helicopter for help. 4 million people w/o power. Just incredible, not in a good way.

Scary. The videos they are showing are just incredible. Hopefully the worst of it is over and the loss of life is minimal.

My thoughts and prayers are with everyone over there.

I am betting the death toll is going to be in the tens of thousands, but let's hope I am horribly wrong.

Hawaii, Indonesia, Philippines, Taiwan, Guam, and the Northern Mariana Islands are all under tsunami watch.

This one is BIG, and I seriously hope no major loss of life occurs. :(

i woke up to this...its shocking isnt it. That water is just ripping past anything it likes and leaving it destoryed. The tsunami looks like its going to be massive, and cause trouble for neigbouring countries / cities.

    this is from the Guardian
"The Pacific tsunami warning centre in Hawaii said a tsunami warning was in effect for Japan, Russia, Marcus Island and the Northern Marianas. A tsunami watch has been issued for Guam, Taiwan, the Philippines, Indonesia and Hawaii."

as for the earthquake being 8.9 it really shows how big that really is! Another fact from the Guardian
"In 1933, a magnitude 8.1 quake in the area killed more than 3,000 people."

CNN just keeps showing the footage of that oil refinery that's burning... the one tank looks HUGE. Oh man... it's bad. =(

And the water just rolling across the fields.

    From Tokyo

I'm in Tokyo. The big shake happened around 3 in the afternoon. I was walking around outside. Returned immediately to my apartment. Lots of broken glass and plates. Books have fallen from the shelf and my office was a mess, but my old mother, dog & cats, and Macs are okay. The aftershocks are continuing.

The damage in Tokyo seems to be fairly light. The situation in Sendai (northern part of Japan) is very serious. It's been hit by tsunami. The TV is showing these helicopter shots of tsunami coming in, and you can actually see cars and buildings and sometimes people being washed away. Can't do anything. I stopped watching TV.

Satoneko and everyone else in Japan: Please take precautions for aftershocks. In my country, the worst earthquake disaster when two separate 7.0 earthquakes hit the same area within minutes of each other, and aftershocks continued for several days. The worst may not be over. We're hoping for everyone's safety.

*Just read another 6.4 quake just happened.

Sadly death toll rises to 29

Having been in a big quake - I know how scary it is and hope that all their preparation helps.
