I have 2 Early 2011 MBPs: a 15" Core i7, and a 13" Core i7

Both have macOS High Sierra on newer SSDs

I want to swap how the family uses the two computers, can I simply swap the two SSDs and be done, or would I need to do something with the OS because of the different hardware?

thank you,
Michael

Swap away!

No need to do anything else. I’ve done the same thing a number of times in the past.

Just swap 'em and see if there is any software update needed. i do this all the time. But if you are like me (I have the 15" 2011, as well) you would track down the original OEM 10.6.7 install discs and keep them on hand.
