You can only do retina scaling on 4K with late-2013 rMBPs (with TB2) or the new Mac Pro.

For 60 Hz support, only the 15" and Mac Pros are supported. The 13" rMBP doesn't support 60 Hz.

I have a 2013 rMBP 13 inch and am not getting any retina scaling above 1080P with a 4K display. Any thought as to what I might be doing wrong?

Are you doing it over HDMI or mDP?

mDP. I'm also able to get 51.75 Hz at 4K on this thing over mDP on a 2013 13inch rMBP which is pretty great. Just wish I could get scaling working!

I've also tried over HDMI and am able to get 30 Hz 4K but no scaling.

I have the same question! i think it's an OSX limitation...
I'm asking if someone could write an app, or maybe there is a command in terminal to activate retina options also for "older" macs? Or do you think in ElCapitan will be present a retina option also for older macs with 4k displays?
