What's the point voting for him if he's just gonna expire soon and hand the baton on to Hockey mom?

One recent poll showed Sarah Palin as the number one concern about John McCain -- even greater than concerns that he's follow in George W's footsteps.

I may join in bashing the electorate in general, but it seems that the public doesn't need a medical journal article -- he's old, he's had cancer (with a visible reminder), and his VP isn't qualified to be president. And previously undecided voters are voting against the ticket for it.

You could make the argument for any sitting president. It is a risk you take. If it wasn't an issue we would not have a VP.

Well, according to the article, it's a 22% chance of him dying within four years. Those are greater odds than people would want to live with, even with a competent VP. Having a president die in office adds a lot of uncertainty and instability to the country

The article seemed mixed about the prognosis. But the fact that there's uncertainty (as pointed out in many articles) about which stage his cancer was, and the fact that he apparently hasn't had any cognitive tests, and his psychological records relating to his time as POW haven't been released, all adds up to a lot of uncertainty about his mental, cognitive, and physical health.

He's young, he smokes, no known health problems. I'm not sure what his mother died of but his father was killed in a car accident. His mother's mother is still alive (barely) his father's mother is still alive. I don't know about his grandfathers.

He's probably got another 30 years ahead of him.

It's not in bad taste as much as posted with questionable motivation.

The best thing to come out of this thread would be (a) if people wear more sun protection to avoid skin cancers like melanoma and had their moles checked regularly, and (b) people stopped smoking.

This thread got me interested, so I calculated the probability that they die in the next four years using the German actuary tables for life insurance based on data from 1994 (don't have the new ones yet). They have a bit higher probabilities than normal but I just wanted to have a value. Of course, American tables might differ, too, so take it for what it's worth. Anyway, this is what I got for a 72 year old man: 22.2% that he dies in the next four years. And for a 47 year old man: 2.3%.

The older I get the more sexy actuarial studies are.
