Man, I thought Bush was about as low as a man could go, but after the last few weeks, I've come to realize that McCain is trying to outdo him in the "scumbag politician" category.

First McCain and Palin were harping about Bill Ayers, claiming that Obama is some kind of terrorist-by-association. That, as we've well documented here, has drawn out the psychotics, giving them free rein to vocalize their blackest, most hateful thoughts.

Then they opened up another line of attack: ACORN. They're telling voters that Obama consorts with radical community organizers who want to "destroy the fabric of America".

And now, the third prong of the attack: "socialism". Yup, having taken a shine to Joe the plumber, McCain realizes he's found a whole new category of lies: tell everyone that Obama is going to take all their money away. Listen:

So this is yet another well-coordinated lie that McCain is going to hammer from now until election day. You can be excused if you are confused and apoplectic about that "check" Obama is going to be writing to people -- it's a bold-faced lie.

Obama has been so good about addressing these attacks that I'm sure he'll have more to say about this "socialism" in the days ahead. But I can't help feeling a little nervous, with McCain gaining in some polls, that the whole Ayers/Acorn/socialism thing is starting to work.

I didnt think this trick was particularly new to be honest- I've heard lots about how Obama was supposed to be a socialist (all from people who dont have a clue what socialism is).

I dont think its a new trick that can suddenly throw a spanner in the Obama machine, its desperate electioneering and McCain is throwing what he can at Obama just to see what will stick.

Dont forget that Obama still is dominating the airwaves and the ground to ground logistics of electioneering. McCain is trying desperatly for a 'narrow-victory' situation, which is going to be very hard now that McCains efforts is going onto keeping some of the gains of 2000 and 2004,rather then expanding territory.

Keep soldiering on and please tell idiots what socialism actually is!

Well, McCarthy, like Hitler, "created" an enemy for his own aggrandisement.

I would not yet put McCain in that company.

    Yet.

Is Clinton a text on Socialism?

Anyway, I would only wish the Dems were socialists. They, sadly, are not. Too bad for 'America'.

Yeah, there is that. But for the moment, McCain is talking about the Republican version, under which the government supposedly takes away money from hard-working people and gives it to...well, who knows? Somebody less "deserving". In McCain's case, Obama's cutting imaginary checks to unspecified people.

Particularly ironic since the Republicans are the biggest supporters of corporate welfare this country has ever known. And the biggest transfer of wealth has been during the last eight years, from the poor and middle class to the rich.

But McCain knows this is a tried-and-true tactic for his side: claim the Democrats are gonna take away your money. So he makes these bold lies, knowing many people will believe them. He's such a scumbag.

    That definition is incomplete.

    From Merriam-Webster:

1: any of various economic and political theories advocating collective or governmental ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods
2 a: a system of society or group living in which there is no private property b: a system or condition of society in which the means of production are owned and controlled by the state
3: a stage of society in Marxist theory transitional between capitalism and communism and distinguished by unequal distribution of goods and pay according to work done

The Oxford definition is accurate and complete, the Webster includes the bastardisation of the meaning as used by opponents of Socialism.

Besides which none of those definitions, bastardised or not, has any relevance to anything the Democrats are proposing. It's playground finger-pointing of the most ill-informed kind, designed to appeal to selfish, paranoid and jingoistic idiots. QED.

You'll have to be more specific on what parts of the definition were "bastardized". AFAIK Merriam-Webster isn't an opponent of socialism.

Most definitions include something about state ownership of property or something about Marxist theory.

noun a political and economic theory of social organization which advocates that the means of production, distribution, and exchange should be owned or regulated by the community as a whole.

That precisely is what Socialism is if it doesn't come under that definition it's not Socialism. Which fairly obviously rules out the usage where France,Sweden or Denmark are referred to as Socialist countries and the usage as skunk pointed out in US mainstream political slanging matches where the usage is plainly absurd.

In American political lingo, socialist is the shorthand for everything and anything too far left. It really has no other meaning. Likewise, "redistribution of wealth" is code for not giving tax breaks to the wealthy. It also has no other meaning in a political context, since factually speaking all taxes redistribute wealth. The real debate is not whether wealth is redistributed, but how -- IOW tax fairness. But call this "redistribution of wealth," and now it's a conversation that some hope we will never have.

You guys are hilarious arguing about the DEFINITION of socialism. Half of you are like: "It's not socialism! He's not a socialist." and the rest of you are like: "What's so wrong with that? He supports basic ideals of socialism, so do I." Hahaha.

Everyone here knows what McCain is getting at. When McCain calls Obama's policies socialist he means that Obama thinks that one group of people has the rights to another group's money. And it's a VERY valid point and something that voters should recognize. Obama believes in redistributing the wealth... taking money away from the people who have more, and giving it to the people who have less. However, what's really sad about this position, is that Obama dances around it. He won't even admit in an interview that this is what he believes. I wish he would because then voters could make a more informed decision.

You can argue all you want about whether this form of socialism and/or redistribution of the wealth is correct, or whether it's good for America... but you certainly can't call McCain a liar or say that he is misleading people. I'm not a McCain supporter by any stretch of the imagination, (anyone who follows my posts on here can verify this) but I can attest to the fact that he is saying the truth. Obama is supportive of "legalized theft" and/or and "Robin Hood economics". Stealing from the rich, and giving to the poor if you will. This is not something you can dispute... only whether or not you agree with this position.

What is so hilarious about wanting to talk sense? If Obama's policies are not remotely connected to socialism - which they clearly are not - why pander to political ignorance by claiming that they are? Social democracy is not socialism, though I would be surprised if such subtleties registered on the average US political slogan-monger.

Obama is proposing a rebalancing of the tax burden within a capitalist system. This is not socialism by any meaningful definition, so why try to exploit primal terrors forever dormant in the US psyche by pretending it is? It's "Reds under the bed" all over again, and this kind of primitive propaganda does nothing to advance political consciousness. Grow up.
