Kind of surprised this isn't all over the WaPo, NYT by this hour. Well maybe it is, I'm winding down before the sun tries to revive me too early, so not going to check now. It's unusual for McConnell to talk this way. Very unusual.

It's like a dog whistle to Priebus, maybe. "We're getting ready to unload this guy, with you or without you, because he's killing us in the Senate."

Meanwhile one sees McConnell's problem though. In the piece it has some voter telling him he's not supporting Trump loudly enough. This is the problem with all of the GOP candidates; each district is going to have some percentage of pro-Trump potential voters. They all have to do their own polling to try to figure out how much daylight they can put between themselves and their impossible knight on white charger.

And now Trump, going on with his theory on how Obama "founded ISIS" ...saying it over and over again and indicating to Hugh Hewitt that he says it because he thinks his fan base likes hearing it.

Oblivious of impact on his own credibility, his campaign, the party. Total insanity.

Why don't they just pull the plug on Trump. He stays on the ballot so his fans can name check him at the polls, what's not to like. Meanwhile he's banned from appearing in any state where the Senate is in play. Money goes to Senate races.

Trump goes, as the Eilen Jewell song has it, to the place "Where They Never Say Your Name"...

But no. Reince Priebus and the RNC seem just totally mystified by this guy.

Reminds me of a line in the memoirs of the poet Christian Wiman, who, believing that God had actually located Wiman during a serious illness, figured God might have said: “Get off your mystified ass and *do* something.”

Which is why I posted it. I am surprised a bunch of people haven't commented on it. It's pretty major for a party leader to admit they might lose. That's just not done. Usually they try to spin it or deflect onto another topic, especially McConnell who is notorious for that kind of thing. But here he is just throwing the cards on the table and saying guys...we might lose this thing. That's unheard of!

The Republicans are on the Titanic and Trump is steering them right into the iceberg.

Too bad. He has been in office for 30 years.

Politicians, like diapers need to be changed often, for the same reasons. Something like that. Mark Twain I think.

In some ways it's really too bad, while I may not agree with Republicans on most issues I do respect the fact that they serve their constituencies and were voted into office on the values they believe in. By association, many decent Republicans who just want to get their beliefs across are instead bombarded with question about Trump, which many of them are on record opposing. We're definitely in the middle of silly season but as a firm believer in the two-party system I hate to see Republicans all marginalized this way.

So amazing for McConnell to speak openly of possibility of not being majority leader though, I about fell out when I clicked on the link from your OP.

I don't think you understand what an "official" spokesman is.

C'mon man. Republicans aren't all only about the hot button issues... lemme think...

I too want there to be distinct party platforms. Otherwise what's government, a rubber stamp?
