Messages in iCloud possible without iMessage enabled?

I would like to keep my SMS in iCloud so I can have them back e.g. when taking new phone in to use without restoring from backup. Can it be done without enabling iMessage?

You can use iCloud to backup your messages, just enable it in settings. But you would only get them back through a restore. They do not stay in sync unless you have iCloud iMessages enabled.
