    I have a mid-2009 13" MBP and am looking to buy a new monitor/tv

I've read the Apple KB article that says mini displayport to hdmi adapters don't support audio
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4241?viewlocale=en_US

But do mini displayport to displayport adapters support audio?

Nope - it's that your computer simply is not outputting an audio signal through that port. You'll have to run audio out of your headphone jack either as analog audio (3.5mm to 3.5mm or L/R RCA) or digital (optical) audio or have some sort of USB audio interface.

You could use something like this, where it would combine the two into an HDMI signal (MDP+optical audio): http://www.monoprice.com/Product?c_id=104&cp_id=10428&cs_id=1042802&p_id=6331&seq=1&format=2 or this one (MDP+USB audio): http://www.monoprice.com/Product?c_id=104&cp_id=10428&cs_id=1042802&p_id=5969&seq=1&format=2

That feature didn't arrive until the 2010 MBPs.
