He’s not resigning because he raped a woman in his basement sex dungeon and took pictures to blackmail her with. He’s resigning because a court ordered he turn over donor information to the Missouri legislature. He’s just jumping on the grenade to protect the GOP’s source of dark money.

More about his campaign finance issues in this Kansas City Star piece.

    Excerpt:

The felony charges stemming from the affair were dropped by the St. Louis prosecutor, but a judge assigned Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker to review the case to consider whether to file any charges.

By early May, the House committee released a second report, this one documenting allegations that Greitens knowingly lied to the state ethics commission about how he came to possess a donor list belonging to The Mission Continues, a veterans charity Greitens founded in 2007. That would be a class A misdemeanor.

The St. Louis prosecutor charged Greitens with a second felony — computer tampering — over the allegations that Greitens had stolen charity donor list and misused it to raise money for his 2016 campaign.

Along the way, Greitens was accused of using a self-destructing text message app called Confide to circumvent the state's open records laws.

He was accused by former campaign staff of exploring the idea of raising money from foreign donors, which would violate a federal law that prohibits campaigns from knowingly accepted money from foreign nationals.

He was accused of using shell companies to filter donations to his campaign to hide the source of the money.

Most recently, he was accused of using his political nonprofit, A New Missouri Inc., to illegally circumvent the state's campaign disclosure laws.

That last accusation, involving his nonprofit, was seen by many as the final straw. A Cole County judge on Tuesday ordered the nonprofit to abide by a subpoena issued by the House investigative committee and turn over communications and documents showing potential coordination among the nonprofit, the governor and the governor's campaign committee, as well as expenditures related to advertising.

A New Missouri was created in February 2017 by Greitens’ closest political advisers. It is housed in the same building as his campaign committee, and the two share some staff. The building was purchased shortly before the creation of A New Missouri by one of Greitens’ biggest campaign donors.

A New Missouri has been accused of being a conduit for money to fight off a union-backed effort to repeal Missouri's right-to-work law. The nonprofit donated $1.2 million to a PAC that failed at its task of putting a pro-right-to-work initiative petition on the ballot this year.

Most of the PAC's money went to political allies of the governor.

Lawmakers were expected to gather next week in Jefferson City to debate impeaching Greitens, the first step toward removing him from office.

And Greitens also was facing increased political pressure to step off the stage to avoid undercutting GOP efforts to unseat U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill, a Democrat considered among the most vulnerable incumbents running for re-election this fall.

This may be the real smoking gun. The GOP didn't want the DNC to be able to link any challengers from McCaskill's seat to Greitens. By the time of the election, unless McCaskill is very careful to keep Greiten's shenanigans in the spotlight, this will fade from voters' memories.

As they say, impeachment is inherently political. So apparently is just the threat to do it... well, it was more than a threat. The debate phase of the process was about to begin. Anyway yeah the GOP really wants McCaskill's seat and hadn't counted on distractions from their own side of politics.

Amazing though what it takes these days to get even the threat of an impeachment out of Republican legislators. It's like a GOP official can practically set part of the party's own house on fire as long as he doesn't burn down one of their key campaign operations.

Heh. Trump's aides should take note and try to keep him from messing around with the midterm primaries. He does have a way of deciding to pull the GOP's chain sometimes. This might not be the season to do that.

Dark money changing hands through non-conventional means can be tracked to an extent.

This guy's troubles are far from over (or maybe not even fully enumerated yet). Latest issues are related to possible violations of the state's open records laws through use of the "secret texting" app Confide by the governor, who resigned last Friday, and most members of his staff.

Greitens and 19 staffers had secret texting app, far more than number reported to AG

It looks like the prosecutors are exploring whether some of the dark money in the A New Missouri PAC may have come from foreign sources, which would have made it illegal and may be why Greitens threw in the towel and resigned rather than continue to face possibility of impeachment.

I’ve come to conclusion that most politicians are scumming people in real life!
