Have you never seen the Crazy Horse monument in South Dakota or even Mount Rushmore?

I sort of like the pose and the fact that it's unfinished which is appropriate given he was assassinated in his prime.

I find it utterly hilarious that it was carved from white marble by Chinese labor. Not to mention the image looks vaguely Chinese.

Now the weird plaque put up by the Perry campaign located about 900 yards away makes more sense.

Its huge and he's coming out of that rock like a giant monster. It looks like if they make another Night at the Museum movie that it would come to life, start stomping on people, growling, "MLK smash!!!!"

I probably shouldn't have quoted anyone, and it is a massive stretch to suggest anything about those who don't like the artwork.

Mount Rushmore is pretty darn creepy too. It looks like they are encased in rock and can't get out.

No, but I am an adult so inanimate objects don't scare me. Neither do black people.

You do understand that South Park is just a cartoon and that it isn't real, don't you?

Exactly. Not only awkward, but incredibly crude and lacking in any nuance or subtlety.

I suppose it's supposed to look "powerful" - but it just looks crude. :(

I like it. As much as I love the Lincoln or Jefferson memorials, I'd hate to see the whole of DC become a repetitive collection of neoclassical monuments. Other monuments like the Vietnam Veterans Memorial were controversial departures from traditional monumental design but have proven to be very successful.

How sad that some of you still think that anyone who doesn't like something "black" must be a white bigot and a gay basher to boot. Those who scream the loudest about dr king's message seem to be those who missed his point entirely. Pathetic.

I just think that it looks uninspired and ugly. I wouldn't go see it, even if I were in DC.

Can you point out the comments you're referring to? I looked back and didn't see any that fit your statement.

I'm also confused by CC's apparent belief that white stone is inappropriate for a black civl rights leader. Should all monuments reflect the skin color of the person or persons they honor? That seems rather puerile, don't you think?

Pretty sure that's a violation of forum rules to call someone else out specifically and rag on them but seriously, you couldn't have looked too hard if you didn't see any that fit....

And you are 100% right about the skin color. That's along the lines of what I was talking about. Its a black man so every piece of art depicting him must be black......come on!
