Have just - at Apples request - moved from MobileMe to iCloud so that I can retain my email address etc. Great system but, boy, does it chew up my internet access. Can't believe the rate at which usage has ramped up. Is there any way that I can reduce this? I am only synching contacts, mail, calendar. Any ideas gratefully appreciated.

Disable Push Mail. Set to manual.

Contacts and Calendar should use negligible.

iCloud should not use anymore then MobileMe if that is what you are saying. If you get a lot of email then I think the FETCH would use less, however, if you do not get much mail then I think PUSH would use less. If you use FETCH then it will have to wake up and check to see if you have any mail (maybe every 15 min or every 30 min etc). If you use PUSH then you have no activity UNTIL you receive mail. However, keep in mind that you will still receive the same amount of mail. So maybe not difference in the end.

Mike/Menel - I dont seem to have the option "push". If I go to Preferences, i Cloud, I can check/uncheck boxes or get account details. Can you pls assist this dinosaur further?

Settings.app -> Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Fetch New Data

    This is where you configure.

    - Manual, only checks mail when you open app, you could wait till youre on wifi.
    - Fetch (15/30/1hr) for balanced, periodic automatic checking
    - Push for immediate updates and fastest syncing.

I use manual on iPad, and fetch 1hr on phone. (Mail)
    Push for contacts and calendars.

I used to use push, didn't have batt life or data issues, just found it distracting.

Thanks. Have done that but the burn is on the MAC - does your suggestion impact PC as well or only phone?
