What the article DOESN'T say is how many TOTAL reporters there are in Iraq/ were in Vietnam. Obviously death tolls are going to be higher if there are five times as many reporters embedded in one conflict versus another. This is the communications era. Satellites make it possible to broadcast footage on millions of American TV sets 5 minutes after it was shot.
I don't agree with how this war is being fought, however, it does not appear that it will end anytime soon despite comments from the Bush admin, and it appears that this modern surge of embedded reporters could be taxing the efforts of the US troops. I do think that news coverage of such events is important, but this has already obviously cost lives.
I thought "embedding" was supposed to protect journalists.
Hmm, maybe it has a different purpose...
